Eutrophication
• Eutrophication occurs when inorganic nutrients
and organic material enters a river or lake.
• For example:
 In intesive farming, farmers often use in organic
fertilisers, which contains nitrates and phosphate,
to improve crop production.
 When these fertilisers used excessively, this
highly soluble inorganic nutrients do not remain
in the soil for long and are quickly leached out
ending up in surrounding rivers and lakes. This
will lead to eutrophication.
The effects of Eutrophication
• Lakes and river that is rich with nutrients encourages
photosynthesising organisms in water particularly algae to
grow rapidly.
• This causes population explosion know as an algal bloom.
• Light intensity in the water is greatly reduced due to the
high density of the algae.
• The death of plants and algae and the subsequent
decomposition of these organism by bacteria lead to a
severe depletion of oxygen in water, causing the death of
aerobic organism
• Rapid growth of microorganisms in water leads to the
increase in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
• BOD: The amount of dissolved oxygen taken
up by microorganisms that decompose
organic waste matter in water.
• The dissolve oxygen concentration can be
used as an indicator of water pollution level.
• A high BOD values indicates the presence of a
large number of microorganisms and this
suggest a high level of pollution.
