Roller
Static Wheeled
Rollers
• Most suited for graded sand,
gravel, crush rock, asphalt
• Used for soils which does not
require great pressure for
compaction
• Not for uniform sands
• For finishing the upper surface of
the soil
• Consist of one large steel drum in
front and 2 steel drums on the
rear
• Weight ranges form 8-10 tons
• Performance can be increased by
increasing the weight of the drum
by ballasting the inside of the
drums with wet sand of water.
Vibrating smooth wheeled rollers
More expensive
Higher compaction level
Compaction can be done up to greater depths
Vibration is to reduce the air voids
Grid Rollers
• Grid rollers are used for
compaction of weathered
rocks, well graded coarse
soils. These rollers are not
suitable for clayey soils, silty
clays and uniform soils. The
main use of these rollers are
in subgrade and sub-base in
road constructions.
• These rollers have a
cylindrical heavy steel surface
consisting of a network of
steel bars forming a grid with
squire holes.
Advantages of Using Grid Rollers
Its advantages are especially high for low-cost, low-traffic roads in tropical
countries.
By the Proctor test, it is determined the optimum water content and the dry
maximum unit weight.
Then it is calculated, how many times the equipment must roll on the soil layer
to achieve the specifications of the soil layer.
Fine-grained soils or "dirty" coarse-grained soils with more than 20 percent
passing No.200 sieve.
These type of soil compaction equipment are suitable for compacting fine-
grained soils such as heavy clays and silty clays. It can be used for compaction of
soils in dams, subgrade layer in pavements and road construction projects.
Tamping/Pad Foot
Compactors
Often thought as Sheepsfoot
roller
High-Speed and Self-Propelled
Non-Vibratory and Vibratory
compaction
Static weight of 15 – 40 tons
Generally effective on all type of
soils
The Usage of Tamping foot Compactor
Advantages Disadvantages
high speed and higher density of soil Lower contact pressure compared to
achieved during compaction sheepsfoot rollers
Reducing the need of spreader High centre-of-gravity, making it
equipment due to the ability to install prone to overturning on slopes
levelling blade
Uniform density and higher degree of Limited to 300mm soil depth
compaction
Suitable for small and congested work
