What is APTT?

APTT (Academic Parent Teacher Teams) is a “model

of family engagement that is grounded in the
notion that schools can thrive when families and
teachers work together, as genuine partners, to
maximize student learning inside and outside of
school” (WestEd)
Why implement APTT’s?

1. Teachers have the opportunity to educate families on grade level

learning goals and content.
2. Improves family engagement throughout the school and provides
opportunities for effective parent and familiy engagement.
3. Enhances parent understanding of learning goals so they can
effectively assist in their child’s learning at home.
4. Allows opportunities for families to actively participate in the
school setting to aide in meeting district or school improvement
goals.
Who participates in APTT’s?

• APTT’s are designed to bring teachers and parents together to

discuss ways to help students reach grade level goals.
Framework for
Developing APTT’s
In Our District
Framework: Step 1

At Open House/Meet the Teacher, give parents access to a Family-

School-Relationship survey to collect their initial thoughts about the
family teacher connection prior to the start of the school year.

Example Survey:

Framework: Step 2

In the first month of school, collect MAP data and other grade level
data (reading levels, math fluency) on each child in your class.
Framework: Step 3

Set up meeting #1 with parents

• This can be done through a newsletter, note home, phone call,
email, etc.
• This should be an inclusive experience for all parents of students
in your class/grade level.
• Please arrange a time that will be attainable for the majority, if
not all, parents.
Framework: Step 4

During the first meeting, you should:

• Share newly collected benchmark data
• Relate student’s data to grade level benchmarks and expectations
• Provide at home interventions
• Provide a series of models that include ’tips’ for each meeting
• Set individual student goals with each family for their student.

This session should last about 75 minutes

Framework: Step 5

Over the next two months, continue collecting data and follow
through with goals set during the first meeting.
Framework: Step 6

Schedule and arrange another parent meeting with ALL

parents.
• This should occur in November or December.
• Review new benchmark data collected from the WINTER MAP
ASSESSMENT
• Compare each child’s data with the expected grade level benchmark.
• Share a new family engagement model
• Encourage parents to analyze progress on their student’s goal and maybe
set a new goal for their student
Framework: Step 7

A Google Form will be created and sent out to all parents

whom have children in the school, regardless of grade or
teacher.
A staff meeting will take place to discuss the feedback
received from parents regarding the first two APTT team
meetings.
Framework: Step 8

Teachers will engage in one night of individual “Parent

Teacher Conferences” with each family to discuss, more
in depth, student achievement, performance data, and
further instructional needs.

This can be completed in February/March and should take place

in 30 minute blocks for each family
Framework: Step 9

The teacher will hold the last of three whole-class meetings to

discuss the last set of data collected for the year and the end of
year projection for each families child.
Framework: Step 10

Utilize the same School-Family-Relationship survey that was

initiated at the beginning of the school year

Collect the results and analyze them for successes and areas of
improvement

Bring all data to the next staff meeting

Cultural Implications

• Accommodations will need to be made for families that lack

transportation to attend the scheduled meetings
• Various forms of communication may need to be implemented to
insure that all families are aware of the new model of parent
involvement.
• In depth and descriptive sessions should be held to ensure that all
parents fully understand the collection of data and it’s purpose.
Successes for the Community

• Including parents in Epstein’s Six Types of Parent involvement will

allow community members to be involved in school activities
• Including families in school activities will allow for parents to
make connections and relationships with other families and as a
result the community will become closer.
