5
ATP - Automatic Train Protection

 Supervises vehicle
movements
 Informs and supervises
the driver
 Warns the driver of
“dangerous” situations
 Forces braking when
required
 Permits simplified
trackside signalling
 Is fail-safe

6
ATO - Automatic Train Operation

 Accelerates and brakes a train automatically

 Stops the train with high
precision
 Opens and closes
the train doors
 May perform
automatic turn-back
 Makes trackside signalling
unnecessary
 Is not fail-safe (i.e requires operational ATP)

ATP regarding the driving of the train, e.g.:
 Wheel diameter
 Position of Antenna Unit
 Cabin activation
 Direction controller status
 Distance travelled
 Current speed
 Current acceleration/deceleration
 ATP speed profile
 Some of this data is programmed into the ATO, some is

 The ATO operation needs data from the trackside, e.g.:

 Door close command
 Departure command
 Platform location
 Skip stop
 Driving strategy
 Coasting position
 Precision Stop Point
 Gradient
 Some of these are stored in an onboard train route data
base, updated during station stops

Fail-safe

 A system failure is allowed, but it will cause the

system to return to a safe state.
 Any single fault of a system component should
immediately be brought to the operators attention.
 The system reverts to a safe state at:
 component failures,
 procedural failures,
 external influences,
 adverse environmental conditions.
