TYPES OF ANGLES

 There are basically 4 main types of angles:

 Acute angle
 Right angle

 Obtuse angle

 Reflex angle
ACUTE ANGLES

 An acute angle is an angle at which the angle is

less than 90 degrees.
 Example of an acute angle:
RIGHT ANGLES

 A right-angle is an angle at which the angles

measures exactly as 90 degrees
 Example of a right-angle:
OBTUSE ANGLE

 An obtuse angle is an angle at which the angle

is between 90 and 180 degrees (90<a<180,
where ‘a’ is any given angle)
 Example of an obtuse angle:
REFLEX ANGLE

 A reflex angle is an angle at which the angle

measured is between 180 and 360
degrees(180<b<360, where ‘b’ is any given
angle)
 Example of a reflex angle:
OTHER ANGLES?

 What do you think is the angle of a straight line

as shown below?
 Do you need to measure with a protractor to
find out?
PROPERTIES OF ANGLES (PART 1)

1. Complementary angles
2. Supplementary angles
3. Angles at a point
4. Adjacent angles on a straight line
5. Vertically opposite angles
COMPLEMENTARY ANGLES

 Two angles that add up to give an angle of 90

degrees are called complementary angles.
 For example, an angle of 40 degrees and an
angle of 50 degrees are complimentary
because they add up to 90 degrees
SUPPLEMENTARY ANGLES

 Two angles that add up to give an angle of 180

degrees are called supplementary angles.
 For example, an angle of 140 degrees and an
angle of 40 degrees are supplementary
because they add up to 180 degrees
ANGLES AT A POINT

 Angles at a point will always add up to 360

degrees.
 Refer to the diagram below:
ADJACENT ANGLES
 Two angles are adjacent if they share a common
side and a common vertex (corner point)

 Angle ABC is adjacent to angle CBD, because:

 They have a common side BC, and a common vertex at
pt B.
VERTICALLY OPPOSITE ANGLES
 Vertically opposite angles are the angles opposite each
other when 2 lines cross

 In this example, angle ‘a’ and ‘b’ are vertically opposite

angles
 Angle ‘a’ and angle ‘b’ are equal
PROPERTIES OF ANGLES (PART 2)

 Alternate angles
 Corresponding angles

 Interior angles
ALTERNATE ANGLES
 The pairs of angles on opposite side of the transversal
but inside the two lines are called alternate angles.

 C and F are alternate angles

 D and E are alternate angles
CORRESPONDING ANGLES
 When two lines are crossed by another line (transversal),
the angles in matching corners are called the
corresponding angles.

 In the diagram shown, ‘a’ and ‘e’, ‘b’ and ‘f’, ‘c’ and ‘g’,
‘d’ and ‘h’ are corresponding angles.
INTERIOR ANGLES
 When two lines are crossed by a transversal,
the pairs of angles on one side of the
transversal but inside the two lines are called
interior angles

 In the diagram shown:

 Angle D and F are interior angles
 Angle C and E are interior angles
PARALLEL LINES AND TRANSVERSAL

 When the 2 lines cut by the transversal are

parallel:
 Alternates angles are equal
 Corresponding angles are equal

 Interior angles add up to 180 degrees
