Flat networks provide some
drawbacks, including: The old design of the network )flat design)
Poor security – Because traffic travels
through one switch, it is not possible to
segment the networks into sections and
prevent users from accessing certain parts of
the network. It is easier for hackers to intercept
data on the network.
No redundancy – Since there is usually one
switch, or a few devices, it is possible for the
switch to fail. Since there is no alternative path,
the network will become inaccessible and
computers may lose connectivity.

Hierarchical Design by E draw
3
Characteristics of hierarchical model :
Scalability, refers to how much growth a network design must
support.
The network design you propose to a customer should be able to adapt to
increases in network usage and scope.
Availability, availability refers to the amount of time a network is available
to users and is often a critical goal for network design customers.
Availability can be expressed as a percent uptime per year, month, week, day, or
hour, compared to the total time in that period.
4
Characteristics of hierarchical model :
Performance, Refers to measures of service quality of a network as seen
by the customer.
Security, It is an activity designed to protect the usability and integrity of
network and data. It includes both hardware and software technologies.
An overall goal that most companies have is that security problems should not
disrupt the company’s ability to conduct business.
Manageability, manageability focuses on making network managers’ jobs
easier
5
Characteristics of hierarchical model :
Adaptability, Adaptability means also is how quickly internetworking devices
must adapt to problems and to upgrades.
A flexible network design can also adapt to changing traffic patterns and QoS
requirements.
Redundant network topologies are becoming increasingly important for many network
design customers who want to ensure business continuity after a major fault or disaster.

Technical Goals Checklist
1. I have documented the customer’s plans for expanding the number of sites,
users, and servers for the next 1 year and the next 2 years.
2. I have documented any goals for maximum average network utilization.
3. I have documented goals for network throughput.
4. I have discussed network security risks and requirements with the customer.
5. I have gathered manageability requirements, including goals for performance.
7
Network Health Checklist
1. Network availability meets current customer goals.
2. Network security meets current customer goals.
3. Wherever possible and appropriate, frame sizes have been optimized to be as
large as possible for the data link layer in use.
4. The response time between clients and hosts is generally less than 100 ms
(1/10th of a second).
8
Network Traffic Checklist
1. I have categorized the traffic flow for each application as being terminal/host,
client/server, peer-to-peer, server/server, or distributed computing.
2. I have identified major traffic sources and stores and documented traffic flow
between them.
3. I have estimated the bandwidth requirements for routing protocols.
4. I have categorized the QoS requirements of each application.
