Introduction
•Literacy rate is a reflection of the educational facilities and quality of education available in a
country, and high school education plays a large part in the educational process
•Scenario in India :
Average Literacy Rate : 74%
Maximum literacy rate : Kerela (93.91%)
Minimum Literacy Rate : Bihar (63.82%)
•World Literacy Rate : 84%
•As per the CIA World Fact Book, India ranked 124 in the literacy index out of a total of 160
countries
•In an effort to determine the literacy scenario of India, we performed a statistical analysis
showing how the literacy rate varies with respect to the population and high school education
system
Research Problem
•Identify the some of the major factors contributing to the literacy rate of the country
•Major determinant considered in this analysis is the absence of sufficient teaching resources to
impart formal education in the country
•We have tried to determine how strongly the literacy rate is dependent upon the high school
infrastructure available
•The statistical analysis of the literacy rate will be helpful in determining the possible factors, to
be dealt with, in order to curb the issue of low literacy rate, in the country
Research Methodologies and Solution
• Methodology Used : Regression Analysis
• Aim : To determine the factors that determine the literacy rate of the country
• Variables Used:
 Dependent Variable : Literacy Rate
 Independent Variable : Population, No. of Schools, No. of Teachers

• Solution:
Equation derived : Y = 81.33295 + 1.06E-05 x1 - 0.00014 x2 + 1.73E-08 x3
R square : 0.307771
Recommendations and Conclusion
•Considering the R square value calculated, i.e. 0.307798222 , it can be inferred that the
regression model is weak. It signifies that there are other qualitative factors that also
significantly influence the literacy rate of the country
•These factors include:
 Socioeconomic factors
 Dropout rate
 Poverty
 Learning Disabilities
•In order to improve the literacy rate in India, following factors need to be considered:
 Awareness
 Social Environment
 Realisation of social responsibility
 Effective implementation of government policies
