 literary work in which special
intensity is given to the
expression of feelings and ideas
by the use of distinctive style
and rhythm; poems collectively
or as a genre of literature.
What is Dramatic Poetry?
 Also known as a dramatic poem, this is
an emotional piece of literature which
includes a story which is recited or
sung. It refers to the dramatic genre of
poetry. Till the nineteenth century
dramas were written in the form of
verses. The definition of this piece of
literature can be quoted as, 'a form of
poetry where a story is narrated in
the form of a lyrical ballad.'
 This kind of poetry has come
from Sanskrit dramas and Greek
tragedies. The method adopted
in this form is that the story is
usually narrated in the form of a
recital or song. Soliloquy and
Dramatic monologues are the
main instruments of this form of
poetry.
Dramatic Poetry
includes ; closet
drama, dramatic
monologues, and
rhyme verse.
Closet Drama
 A closet drama (or closet play) is a play
created primarily for reading, rather than
production. Closet dramas are traditionally
defined in narrower terms as belonging to a
genre of dramatic writing unconcerned with
stage technique. Stageability is only one aspect
of closet drama: historically, playwrights might
choose the genre of 'closet' dramatic writing
to avoid censorship of their works, for
example in the case of political tragedies.
Closet drama has also been used as a mode of
dramatic writing for those without access to
the commercial playhouse, and in this context
has become closely associated with early
modern women's writing. Thus, it was
considered to be a freeing style of writing.
 Dramatic Monologue
 a combination of drama and poetry.
 presents the speech o a single character
“in a specific situation at a critical
moment”
 the speaker’s personality and character,
his relationship to others, his sense of
value and attitudes towards life are
indirectly gleaned from his monologue.

Rhyme Verse
 A Rhyming Couplet is two line of the
same length that rhyme and complete
one thought. There is no limit to the
length of the lines. Rhyming words are
words that sound the same when
spoken, they don't necessarily have to
be spelt the same. This is poetry that is
divided into stanzas or verses (groups
of lines) in which all or some of the
lines have a rhyme word at the end.
 SOLILOQUY
 a passage spoken by a speaker in a
poem or a character in a play.
 the thoughts expressed, emotions
displayed, and the revelations made,
freely and without inhibition, give deep
insights into the character.
 used in poetic dramas to enrich and
vivify characterization.
 inform the audience about other
developments in the play.
Examples:
From Romeo and Juliet-Juliet speaks her thoughts aloud just
before she drinks the potion that will make her appear to be
dead: Come, vial. (holds out the vial)
What if this mixture do not work at all?
Shall I be married then tomorrow morning?
No, no. This shall forbid it. Lie thou there.
(lays her knife down)
What if it be a poison, which the friar
Subtly hath ministered to have me dead,
Lest in this marriage he should be dishonored
Because he married me before to Romeo?
I fear it is. And yet, methinks, it should not,
For he hath still been tried a holy man.
How if, when I am laid into the tomb,
I wake before the time that Romeo
Come to redeem me? There's a fearful point.

 CHARACTER SKETCH
