Functions of asphalt reinforcement

According to European
Standard EN-15381:2008 –
Characteristics required
for use in pavements and
asphalt overlays:

• Stress relief [STR]

• Interlayer Barrier [B]
• Reinforcement [R]
Stress relief [STR]

• Finite Element analysis shows high

tensions around ending

• (un)loading leads to further

expanding

propagation
No tension at edge of crack
Without Reinforcement

Facing of crack transmits no (shear)forces

No granular
• Delays frost damage by detach-
interlock

ment of binder film

• Delays deterioration of binder by

oxidation

Asphalt Reinforcement with Armatex®
A Polyester or Polyvinyl Alcohol yarn knitted in a grid patern
Asphalt reinforcement with Armatex® RSR and RSM

The 60 gr. Nonwoven, an optimum weigth:

1. Acts as a stress relief membrane with Tack coat (SAMI)

2. Acts as a long-term water barrier

3. Nonwoven makes installation easier

4. Nonwoven facilitate right amount of ‘glue’

5. material resistance to installation temperature

6. Transparent White color guarantees tack coat penetration

Labatory Testing

With co-operation with Tech.University of Prag,

Ass.Prof.Ing. Luxemburg, PhD.

1. Indirect tensile strength result (ITSR)

2. Resistence to permanent deformations
3. Flexural strength (Stress strength by bend)
4. Marshall test (stability, strain, stiffness)
5. Shear strength test on bonding (Leutner)
Why use Armatex RSR and RSM?

A. High compatibility in mechanical behavior:

• Thermal elongation
• Elastic modules

B. Easy and durable installation:

• Low fragility
• Easier and safe handling
• Easy to assess correct installation
C. Easy to recycle

D. Excellent performance
• Behavior under dynamic load
• High tensile strengths
• Substantial strength at low strain
3. TACK-COAT BREAKING (EMULSION GETS BLACK)
4. LAYING THE ARMATEX (BY HAND)
4. LAYING THE ARMATEX (BY MACHINE)
5. MAKING JOINT / OVERLAPS
5. LAYING OVERLAY

Q&A
1. MELTING POINT OF PP/PET/PVA

Is our product resistant to the installation temperature?

1. Melting point of PP is 165 °C!

2. Melting point of PVA is 200 °C!
3. Melting point of PET is 250 °C!
4. The temperature of bitumen emulsion (as a tack coat) is 200 °C
(in the practice it is no higher than 170 °C) *
5. The temperature of the asphalt is 200 °C
(in the practice it is no higher than180 °C) *
