INTRODUCTION
An offshore drilling rig is a large
structure on or in water with facilities to
drill well, to extract and process Oil and
Natural Gas, and to temporarily store
product until it can be brought to shore for
refining and marketing.
TYPES OF OFFSHORE RIGS
LEG TYPE
 Usually three legs with lattice
construction.
 It provides a steady and relatively motion
free platform in the drilling position.
 Here preloading is required to drive the
legs into the ocean bottom.
ADVANTAGES
 Thesetypes of units are upgradeable from
a technical and commercial standpoint.

 Stable work platform.

 Relatively inexpensive mobilization costs.

 Availability.
MAT TYPE

•The mat-type jack up

consists of three legs.
•A more logical choice
for drilling
environments that have
a soft floor .
•The Mat-type jack up
are usually shaped like
an “A”.
ADVANTAGES

 It provides fixed platform.

 Its initial cost is less.

 It can work on soft bottom areas.

 It can be used to withstand hurricane type

storm.

 It is best for water depths upto 300ft .

DISADVANTAGES

 They are very susceptible to damage from

any object on the ocean floor.

 Sometimes It is difficult to tow.

 Their upper hull has limited open deck

storage space.

 Their legs sometimes form a wind-induced

leg vibration.
SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE RIGS
A semi-submersible rig is a specialized
marine vessel used in the Oil and Gas
Industry.
The semi-submersible has the primary
design advantage of placing the
buoyancy chamber below the surface of
water.
ADVANTAGES

 Provides a relatively stable drilling

platform
 It functions under more severe sea and
weather conditions than the others.
 Its capabilities for water depth are
excellent upto 2000 ft. (600 m).
DISADVANTAGES

 Limited capacity for cargo transportation.

 Requires more support vessel for supply,
anchor handling.
 Must use marine riser not needed by
Jack-ups
 Travel speeds are low as compared to
drill ship.
DRILLING BARGE

 A drilling barge is a drilling

rig used in the petroleum
industry for drilling oil wells in
in inland lakes, swamps,
marshes and shallow water
areas that are not easily
accessed by conventional
marine drilling rigs and
equipment.

 This type of rig designed to

work in shallow water less than
20ft.
INLAND BARGES ARE COMPOSED OF TWO
TYPES:

o Barge mounted rigs: This type rig is capable of

drilling in water depths from 0 to 12 feet. After being
towed on location, the rig’s hull is filled with water
until it rests on bottom.

o Posted barge mounted rigs: These type rigs have an

upper deck supported by posts from the lower hull.
The deck contains all drilling equipment and
accommodations. Posted barges are capable of
drilling in water depths from 0 to 20 feet. The rig is
towed on location and the lower hull filled with water
to secure it on bottom.
DISADVANTAGES:

o Strictly limited to inland operations.

o Operations for only certain and limited depth (upto 20

ft).

o Can’t handle harsh weather conditions.

o Can be operated only in calm waters.

DRILL SHIPS
The first drillship was the CUSS I, designed by Robert F. Bauer of
Global Marine in 1955.
 Drill ships today are mainly used for exploratory
drilling, not production drilling.
 A typical crew consists of typical 120 crew members.
 They are less stable compared to semi-submersibles.
 To gain stability, these ships use their anchors or the
DPS equipped with complex algorithms and a
numerical model of the ship coupled with the thrusters.
 Typically employed in deep and ultra-deep waters,
drillships work in water depths ranging from 2,000 to
more than 10,000 feet (610 to 3,048 meters).
 Drilling equipment is passed through the vessel's moon
pool and connected to the well equipment below via
riser pipe.
 Transocean, Seadrill,Frontier Drilling, Pride are a few
glonbal drillship companies.
CONCLUSION
Depending upon the requirements, weather conditions
and water depths, the platforms and rig types must be
selected to ensure optimum and safe production of
hydrocarbons from the oceanic and sea regions.
