 Human do live in a society, which requires an invisible bond


towards another to achieve the goal of being together –
which is to survive as a species

artifacts (probably readable media) which contain textual, fictional, rhetorical, and

• Hirsch (1983) defined this term to what he called as the ability of reading and knowing
a certain culture’s aspects, such as languae, signs, symbols, and maybe more general
things like, the history, any cultural events, and many more.
This research will examines the issues about integrity (honesty, self-motivation, moral courage),
altruism, and cultural literacy in classical novel.

This novel has the main character who also is the narrator: David Copperfield
In order to discover the issue, the author uses narrative inquiry as the method.
The researcher uses this novel as a corpus to analyze a cultural issues from the 1800s in England

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY


1. To examine kinds the moral values and cultural literacy in David
Copperfield Novel.
2. To expose the moral values and cultural literacy that
represented in David Copperfield Novel.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of the study is to expose the moral values within the David
Copperfield novel and also give larger opportunity to future researchers to make
a new related study regarding the similar issues in a classic novel.

Scope of the study

The scope of the study is limited by the coverage of actions, utterances, choices,
and the other things that show the moral values of David Copperfield himself
which was narrated by himself.

research method
This research uses qualitative research method. Qualitative method limits the author to
seek the understanding of several social aspects, and the method is to describe its aims
(Pattong and Cochran 2002). In this case, qualitative method has helped the author in
generating ways of conducting the research and with narrative inquiry to identify the
cultural literacy.

SOURCE OF DATA
The data of the research lies in the David Copperfield novel. Precisely, the sequences of
events which of provide information regarding moral values and cultural literacy. As the
novel will tell the story of David Copperfield, who has multiple conflicts in his life, the study
pursues the contextual information from dialogue, settings, characterizations, and other
intrinsic elements of literary work. This means the content of novel is the data source of the
study.
Data collecting procedure

1. Reading the David Copperfield novel thoroughly.

2. Finding sequences in the novel that provide information regarding moral


values and cultural literacy.

3. Highlighting those sequences that consist of integrity, altruism, or cultural


literacy value.
Data analysis procedure

1. Classifying the sequences each character and events by using narrative


inquiry.
2. Classifying the sequences that contain intergrity (honesty, self-motivation,
moral courage)
3. Classifying the sequences that contain altruism
4. Classifying the sequences that contain cultural literacy
5. Make an interpretation of the data analysis.
6. Draw the conclusions.
