Settler Relations with

Aboriginal Australian
People
What settlers wanted to do with the
aboriginals

 The British had planned to be equal

aboriginal people and then bring them
into the British culture and make them work
for the colony.
 Governor Phillip wanted to avoid
unnecessary conflict with the Aboriginal
people by treating them with kindness and
ordering his soldiers not to shoot at them.
He captured seven Aboriginals. Phillip
wanted them to learn English and act as
translators between the Indigenous groups
and the British.
Impact on the British colony

 One of the most devastating impacts of

British colonisation was the introduction
of diseases such as influenza, venereal
disease, typhoid, tuberculosis,
pneumonia, measles and whooping
cough. Many of the Eora people who
lived on the foreshores of Sydney
Harbour died from smallpox in the first
years of colonisation, although the origin
of the infection remains a source of
disagreement amongst historians.
The arrival

► When British settlers first arrived the

Aboriginals wanted to avoid them. The
number of settlers had kept rising and more
land had been taken over which mad the
British unavoidable.
