Chosen City
In Ersilla, to establish the relationships that sustain the city's life, the
inhabitants stretch strings from the corners of the houses,
white or black or gray or black-and-white according to whether they
mark a relationship of blood, of trade, authority, agency. When the
strings become so numerous that you can no longer pass among
them, the inhabitants leave: the houses are dismantled; only the
strings and their supports remain.

From a mountainside, camping with their household goods,

Ersilla's refugees look at the labyrinth of taut strings and poles that
rise in the plain. That is the city of Ersilia still, and they are nothing.
They rebuild Ersilia elsewhere. They weave a similar pattern of
strings which they would like to be more complex and at the same
time more regular than the other. Then they abandon it and take
themselves and their houses still farther away.

Thus, when traveling in the territory of Ersilla, you come upon the
ruins of abandoned cities, without the walls which do not last,
without the bones of the dead which the wind rolls away:
spiderwebs of intricate relationships seeking a form.
I have chosen to do the city Ersilla out of all 14 Cities as I found it the most Interesting one to do and found the idea of the
inhabitants use of strings to symbolizes their relationships with each other and when there are too many, dismantling the
houses and leaving to somewhere new is a great concept.

For my initial thumbnails for this city of strings are done using lines and my inspiration for my thumbnails came from the
traditional native Americans, and used their teepees as structures for the houses of Ersilia. I got this Idea from when Calvino
says, ‘stretch strings from the corners of the houses’ and ‘the houses are dismantled; only the strings and their supports remain.’ as this gave me
the idea to use tents as their house as they would allow the inhabitants to easier dismantle there house and to attach strings
more easily. The concept to use teepee comes from leaving behind the supports of the tents as I found that these would give it
a more natural look and that the inhabitants would just have to take the canvas off making it easier to leave it behind. This
concept lead me to mostly focusing on the buildings of Ersilla. I also used a lot of black, white and grey in my thumbnails, so
in my future concept art I want to involve more color.

For my concept art of this city, I haven’t really decided on how to show my city in the exterior shot yet, however I am leaning
to drawing the shot at dust or dawn to get the different colors in the sky for the background to create a calm and tranquil
atmosphere to the shot. My Idea for this is inspired by the use of bright, strong colors in the animated Film ‘Spirit’ by
DreamWorks and that it matches into what I want do quite well. For the interior shot, I want to do more of a shop look for it
as Ersilla is meant to be a trading city, which is why I want to do more of a shop look or a trading post, and I want to make
some parts of the interior traditional gypsy like for their use of bright colors and fabrics. I also want to include the gypsy
theme as they too are always on the move.

Overall I want to make the city come alive with color and create a city that is always on the move.
