WHAT IS G-20 ??

• The Group of Twenty (G-20) Finance Ministers and


Central Bank Governors

• Established in 1999

• Inaugural meeting of the G-20 took place in Berlin, on


December 1516, 1999

• G-20 was created;


a) financial crises of the late 1990s,
b) to include key emerging-market countries to discuss core
of global economic discussion and governance
MANDATE

• To bring together systemically important industrialized


and developing economies to discuss key issues in the
global economy

• Open and constructive discussion between industrial and


emerging-market countries on key issues related to
global economic stability

• Providing opportunities for dialogue on;


a) national policies,
b) international co-operation,
c) international financial institutions
MEMBERS
• The G-20 is made up of the finance ministers and central bank
governors of 19 countries;
• A- Argentina, Australia
• B- Brazil
• C- Canada, China
• France
• Germany
• I- India, Indonesia, Italy
• Japan
• Mexico
• Russia
• S- Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea
• Turkey
• U- United Kingdom, United States of America

• The European Union represented by Council Presidency &


European Central Bank
• Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
• President of the World Bank
• Chairs of the International Monetary and Financial Committee
• Chairs of development Committee of the IMF and World Bank

also participate in G-20 meetings on an ex-officio basis

• Member countries represent;


i. 90 % of global gross national product,
ii. 80 % of world trade (including intra-trade),
iii. 2/3rd of the world's population

•But after the addition of other countries like China,
India etc. it has grown to G20
•Now the decision is made that G20 will be the
prime forum for international economic
cooperation
Challenges remain

• Market still underestimate the strength of recovery

• There are still differences over financial regulation


reforms for bankers

• Due to different jurisdiction there are various financial


regulatory standards

• Lack of proper action plan for protectionism


INDIA at G20 summit pittsburgh

• Pressure on India to sign NPT(Nuclear Non-


proliferation Treaty )
– UN security council insist all countries to sign NPT

– New Delhi called this as Discrimination

– India cant accept obligations arising out of NPT because


the nuclear weapons are vital for countries securities

– G20 meet as opportunity for India to get some clarity on


US Indian nuke deal
– Help package to Pakistan of $2 billion by US congress
which is used by Pakistan for their military component
against India

• India played major role in climate change talks

– PM called on Pakistan to end terrorism – “a state policy”

– About 26/11 attacks


• Enough evidence was given to Pakistan but sill no action is
taken against real culprits

– Only if the action is taken then we will walk on extra mile

Global Economic Issues

• Stimulate economic growth


– to strengthen coordination in macroeconomic policies
– time-effectiveness and foresight in policy guidance
– to promote consumption and expand domestic demand
– free and open global trade and investment system
– cooperation in energy-saving
– to strengthen international cooperation in science and
technology

supervision system
– The future financial supervision system should be simple,
easy to operate and easy to affix responsibility
– strengthen cooperation in financial supervision
– expand the coverage of financial supervision

– Imbalance between the income and expenditure of trade
– Imbalance between the possession and consumption of

Protesters march at G-20 summit:

• Pittsburgh public safety officials say 83 people were


arrested at protests and other events during the Group of
20 summit and about $50,000 in property damage was
done.
• Police say a man who smashed windows at a Citizens
Bank branch in the city’s Oakland section was
responsible for $20,000 in damage.
• Police Chief Nate Harper and public safety Director
Michael Huss praised law enforcement for the handling
of events related to the G-20 meeting of leaders from the
world’s richest countries.

• The main message of the so-called Peoples' March to the


G-20 was a demand for solutions to the planet's economic
and environmental challenges different than those the
world's richest countries are pursuing.
• Police fired canisters of pepper spray and smoke at
marchers after anarchists responded to calls to disperse by
rolling trash bins, throwing rocks and breaking windows.
• The march had about 1,000 protesters and did not have a
city permit. police declared it an unlawful assembly.City
Police Chief Nate Harper says 17 to 19 people were
arrested.
Four protesters dangle from the West End Bridge while steadying a
banner warning of "climate destruction" if world leaders don't act to
control carbon dioxide emissions.
Groups protesting the G-20 summit being held in Pittsburgh
