A. Description
The Jigsaw Strategy emphasizes
cooperation and shared responsibility
within groups of pupils and is particularly
effective for increasing involvement of each
pupil in the class. This strategy can be
applied in the different subject areas in the
elementary curriculum.
A. Description
The strategy involves the establishment of
home groups, each member is allocated a task
to be researched. All members of the different
home groups, who are researching the same
task form an expert group. After the expert
group have researched their particular ask,
each member then returns to their home
group to share the information they have
learned.
B. Materials Needed
The Jigsaw Strategy uses any informative
materials like books, magazines, hand-outs, etc.
and worksheets.
Manipulatives may also be used especially in
Science and Mathematics subjects.
C. Procedure
The following are the instructions to be given to the pupils
in using jigsaw as a teaching strategy.

STEP 1

◦Form a HOME GROUP of four. Distribute the


set of four information sheets supplied.

STEP 2
◦Move to form an EXPERT GROUP. Groups of
three or four are best, so there may be a
need to divide into smaller groups of only
three or four pupils.

STEP 3
◦Allot three minutes to read the information
and pick out the key points in it. Take this
knowledge back to the HOME GROUP.

STEP 4
◦Return to the HOME GROUP and, take turns
sharing key points with the members of the
group. Five minutes is given for this task.

STEP 5
◦ Collate the information that were selected and
record it in the worksheet. Each member of the
HOME GROUP should end up with a worksheet
containing ALL of the necessary information.
D. Evaluation
The evaluation is done through guided
questions formulated or given by the teacher.
Since this is a group task, everyone in the group
will receive equal credits.
