JULIE SMITH

JOT2 Task 2
A. When would Constructivism, Behaviorism,
Cognitivism would be appropriate and beneficial for
learners?
A. When Constructivism is Beneficial for Learners

Constructivism is beneficial for learners when

they already have an understanding of the
material. The students will be doing the
“heavy lifting” instead of listening to a teacher
talk. This time of learner is important for
learners who need a hands on approach.
Students with ADHD, IEPs and gifted students
can all benefit from hands on learning as they
are doing the learning for themselves.
A. When Cognitivism is Beneficial for
Learners

Cognitivism is beneficial when:

- Students need to add new material to
their existing knowledge.

- When there are many different

learning styles in the classroom.
A. When Behaviorism is Beneficial for
Learners

-When the target behavior is easy to

observe and measure.

- When used as a tool to obtain

appropriate behavior.
B. Behaviorism Lesson Plan
*Behaviorism*
Rewards for desired outcomes

● Goal: Students will read short vowel words.

● Objective: First grade students will decode cvc and
ccvc words 9/10 times.
● Materials: cvc cards, ccvc cards
● Setting: Students read word cards provided by the
teacher. They receive a gem for each correct word they
read.
● Colorado Standard :
● Standard: 1. Oral Expression and Listening
● a. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and
sounds (phonemes). (CCSS: RF.1.2)
● (CDE, 2018)
C. Adapted Lesson Plan
*Constructivism*
learning through playing
● Goal: Students will read short vowel words.
● Objective: First grade students will decode cvc and ccvc
words 9/10 times.
● Materials: onset and rhyme slide game and digraph a
word game.
● (Colorado Start Strong, 2016)

● Setting: Students play various games with the cvc and

ccvc parterns.
● Colorado Standard : Same
D. Most Beneficial Lesson Plan
● The most beneficial lesson plan for first grade students
learning to read short vowel words would be the
constructivism approach. Students who are still working
on this concept in first grade are falling behind and would
benefit from having a more exciting approach to learning
the concept. They feel like they are playing and not
learning. Learners are also responsible for their own
learning during this approach.

● The behaviorist approach is not helpful because students

are just trying to recite what the teacher has on the card
to receive a gem.
E. Benefits of Following a Design Theory
All learners and classrooms are not the
same.
- Deign theories help you pick the theory that is best
for your content.
- Every learner has a different way of learning and
design theory helps you to pick which way of
teaching is best for your particular learners.
- All classrooms have limited time to teach content.
Design theory helps you to be organized and
intentional in your instruction.
F. Strengths of Backwards Design

-Start with the end in mind so you know

where students need to be in the end.

-Identify the goal right away.

-Establishes BIG ideas that learners should

know years from now.
F. Limitations of Backwards Design

- There is constant assessment to drive

instruction.

- There is a lot of planning for instruction

in the beginning.
F. Strengths of Gagne’s Events

- Scripted and would be great for new

teachers to follow.

- Focuses on gaining attention of the

learner.
-
- Hits all of the parts of a an effective
lesson.
F. Limitations of Gagne’s Events

- Time is not always available to hit all

nine of the steps.

- Takes away from teachable moments

because teachers are worried about
using the script.
F. Strengths of Teaching for
Understanding

- Students receive constant feedback from the

teacher.

- Focuses on attention to learner interest.

F. Weaknesses of Teaching for
Understanding

- Could be difficult at primary level.

- A lot of planning goes in to creating

units for teaching topics.
G. Most Appropriate Design Theory
for My Instructional Setting
The most appropriate design theory for my classroom is
Backwards Design because…
- -Having the end in mind is important for intentional
teaching.
- - Students should know what the goals are for what they
are learning.
- - I do not like to teach with a script. I believe in using
teachable moments during instruction that help get to the
end result.
- -Ongoing assessments and feedback help fix learner
errors now instead of waiting until the end of the unit you
are teaching.
