Design and Product development
• Product development refers to all the stages that the product goes
through. from starting with a concept, to market release.

• Product development may involve modification of an existing product

or its presentation, or formulation of an entirely new product that
satisfies a newly defined customer want or market niche.

Product Roadmap
• Product development process needs to have a system in order to prioritize,
summarize, and capture your product’s key objectives.

• A product roadmap should be designed to convey product in a clear and

visual way.

• Building roadmaps visually, helps the team refer back to the product
strategy more easily.

• It helps the manager present the product’s goals and plans in a better way
to the company’s stakeholders.

Agile product development
• Like product development, it’s all the steps involved in delivering a
product to the market, but it also includes agile software
development, like rapid renewal based on user feedback.
• The benefit of the agile framework is that it allows an organization to
shorten the cycle from brainstorming through actually launching a
product.
• Production team intentionally pushes out versions of the product
(MVPs) Much more quickly.
• This helps acquire feedback faster and improve the product.

Example of product development
• Nissan Motors

• Product development: create new products that can be sold in

existing markets (Nissan leaf)

• Nissan remained the leader in electric vehicle market.

Product Design and New Product
Development
• Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of
an object, system or measurable human interaction.

• Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional,

economic, and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object
and design process.
• It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling,
interactive adjustment, and re-design.

Design as a process
• Kees Dorst and Judith Dijkhuis argued that there are " two basic and
fundamentally different ways to describe design process "

• The prevailing view has been called "the rational model" and the
alternative view has been called "reflection-in-action“.

2018-11-07 Innovation Management 8

The rational model
• The rational model argues that:

• designers attempt to optimize a design candidate for

known constraints and objectives.

• the design process is plan-driven.

• the design process is understood in terms of a discrete sequence of

stages.
2018-11-07 Innovation Management 9
Stages of the Rational Model
• Pre-production design

• Design during production

• Post-production design feedback for future designs

• Redesign

Criticism of the Rational Model
• The rational model has been widely criticized on two primary
grounds:
• Designers do not work this way – extensive empirical evidence has
demonstrated that designers do not act as the rational model
suggests.
• Unrealistic assumptions – goals are often unknown when a design
project begins, and the requirements and constraints continue to
change.

The Action-centric model
• The action-centric model argues that designers use creativity
and emotion to generate design candidates.

• The design process is improvised.

• There is no universal sequence of stages is apparent – analysis, design

and implementation happen at the same time and are unseperably
linked.

2018-11-07 Innovation Management 12

Action centric-model

• The action-centric model sees design as informed by research and

knowledge.
• However, research and knowledge are brought into the design
process through the judgment and common sense of designers
• This happens by designers "thinking on their feet" – more than
through the predictable and controlled process stipulated by the
rational model.

Intellectual Property and Creating a business
• Intellectual property (IP) is a category of property that includes
intangible creations of the human intellect, and primarily
encompasses copyrights, patents, and trademarks.

• It also includes other types of rights, such as trade secrets, publicity

rights, and moral rights.

Importance of Intellectual Property in
Business
Intellectual Property are important to businesses, as they are intangible
assets that can be financially exploited, by either being sold or
licensed.

When a business is establishing its presence in the marketplace,

protecting and managing its intellectual property is critical as it can
mean the difference between success or failure.
