Everything On Earth Is Connected
● What is an ecosystem?
● A biological community of interacting
organisms and their physical
● That means that everything is
○ Plants to soil to water
Ecosystems vs Habitats
● Ecosystem: a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment

● Habitat: the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism

○ Different types

● An ecosystem is a collection of habitats

Types of Habitats
● Terrestrial(Land) habitats

○ Forests, grasslands, rainforests, and deserts

○ Defined by plant structure, leaf type, plant spacing, and climate

● Freshwater habitats

○ Bogs, ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams

● Marine habitats

○ Poorly studied
Animals that live in these habitats
● Terrestrial(Land) Animals

○ Elephants, Owls, Wolves, Bears, Woodpeckers

● Freshwater Animals

○ Alligators, River Otters, Hippopotamus, Snow Goose

● Marine Animals

○ Sharks, Sea Turtles, Dolphins, Sea Otters

Virtual field trips
Terrestrial Habitats
● Deserts - Sahara

● Coniferous Forest - North Central Rockies Forest

● Temperate Grassland - Pampas of Argentina

● Tundra - East Antarctica

● Taiga - Alaska

● Rainforest - Amazon Rainforest in Brazil

● Coastal - California beaches

Freshwater Habitats
● Bog - Munster, Ireland

● Marsh - Okavango Delta

● Swamp - Florida everglades

● Lakes and ponds - Great Lakes

● Rivers and streams - Mississippi River

● Brackish water - Baltic Sea

Marine Habitats

● Deep Ocean

● Open Ocean - All of ocean

● Sea Bed - Bottom of the ocean

● Rockpools - Santa Cruz beach

● Reefs - Australia

● Shallow Seas - Galapagos Islands

● Hydrothermal Vents - Along tectonic plates

● Intertidal Zone - Pacific Islands

Mini Ecosystems
Building Your Ecosystem
● Have a Green Girl cut the bottle in half where the top
meets the central cylinder
● Fill ½ of the bottom portion with water
● Poke a hole in the coffee filter and place them in the top
part of the bottle
● Tie a knot in the string and attach it in coffee filter. Cut
it to a length that lets it hang into the water (this will
“water” your plant)
● Fill coffee filter with soil and your plant
● Place top into the bottom
● Tape closed
● You’re done!
Food For Birds
All About Birds
● Birds have feathers, wings, lay eggs and are warm blooded.

● There are around 10000 different species of birds worldwide.

● The Ostrich is the largest bird in the world.

● The chicken is the most common species of bird found in the

● Hummingbirds can fly backwards.

● Homing pigeons have been used for thousands of years to carry

Making Your Bird Feeder
● Have a GG member cut the bottle in half and cut 4 holes
● String through the holes and tie through the top
● Decorate!
● Fill with bird seed
Dirt Cups
The Layers of the Earth
● The Earth is made up of 4 layers
○ Crust
○ Mantle
○ Outer Core
○ Inner core
● Many geologists believe that as
the Earth cooled the heavier,
denser materials sank to the
center and the lighter materials
rose to the top.
● The crust is made of the lightest
materials (rock- basalts and
granites) and the core consists of
heavy metals (nickel and iron).
All About Worms
Making Dirt Cups
● Put your oreos in a bag and crush them with a spoon (hit it
like a hammer! )
● Put crushed oreos in pudding
● Add worms posterior down
● Eat!
