Role of The Infection Control

Link Practitioner
The Role Includes
• An identified staff in the clinical area who is
supported by the Infection Control Nurses.
• To cascade information to ward staff from the
Infection Control Link Practitioners training.
What is not expected of an Infection Control Link
Practitioner

• It is not your responsibility to close a ward


during an outbreak of infection or to give
advice on planning/ refurbishment works.
• Specialist advice should always be sought
from the Infection Control Team
What is expected of an ICLP?
• To liaise between their clinical area and the
Infection Control Team.
• To liaise with the manager to negotiate
protected time to carry out the role of the
ICLP
• To act as a resource person for staff
concerning infection control related problems
in the clinical area (e.g. policy, practices.
• To cascade relevant information from ICLP
• Training sessions to all staff within their clinical
area and return the cascading form to the
infection control team.
• To be ask for advice regarding the
purchase/introduction and use of equipment in
their clinical area in relation to:
- a Infection Control Hazards
• • b Care and maintenance
• • c Decontamination and Storage
ICLP Cascading Forms
• After each and every
• ICLP session,
• supporting information
• must be accessed on
• the ICT website by the
• ICLP. This must then
• be cascaded back to
• colleagues.
• • Once the form is
• completed it must be
• returned to the ICT.
• • A cascading form will
• be available to print off
• for this session shortly.

Hand Hygiene
• Hand hygiene is very important in the
• prevention and control of infection.
• • All ICLP’s will be issued with a hand
• hygiene kit which contains synthetic germs
• and an inspection lamp.
• • The ICLP will be responsible for the care
• of this kit. (contact ICT for spares)
Hand Hygiene Kit
When should I Use the Kit?
• Hand hygiene returns are completed every 6
• months (July and December).
• • All staff in the area of work, including
• Domestics, Doctors and those on nights. If a
• staff is off on long term sick please state on
• form.
• • This kit should not be used for hand hygiene
• observation which is a separate form carried out
• monthly (3 staff observed ). This is kept at ward
• level.

We need your data!!
• All information regarding any infection ie
MRSA,
• BBV is recorded on an database.
• This is reviewed on a regular basis by the
• Infection Control
• Doctor and some information is reported on
to other bodies ie HPA.
Mandatory Attendance
• Once you have been appointed as an ICLP
• attendance at training sessions is mandatory.
• You will be given all training dates in advance so
• you must liaise with your manager to arrange
• the time needed.
• If for some reason you cannot attend a session a
• deputy should be nominated and the ICT
• informed. This is to ensure that the most up to
• date information is cascaded back to your area.
