Vintamin B3

Vitamin B3 (Niacin) is used commonly to


refer to two different compounds, nicotinic
acid and niacinamide.

•Niacin is one of the most stable of the B


vitamins. It is resistant to the effects of
heat, light, air, acid, and alkali.
•Niacin, is water-soluble, and absorbed
from the small intestine
• Small amounts may be stored in the liver
•Most of excess is excreted in the urine
Functions
 Involved in more than 50 different metabolic reactions in
the human body. Is required for cell respiration, helps in
the release of energy and metabolism of carbohydrates,
fats, and proteins
 Played the key role in glycolysis, are important in fatty
acid synthesis and in the deamination of amino acids.
 Precursor for coenzymes and help break down and utilize
proteins fats and carbohydrates.
 Stimulate circulation
 Reduce cholesterol levels in the blood
 Is important to healthy activity of the nervous system and
normal brain function, and a memory-enhancer.
 Supports the health of tissues of the skin, tongue and
digestive tract
 The synthesis of the sex hormones
 Helps synthesize DNA

 Only small to moderate amounts of Vitamin B3 occur in
foods
 Other Niacin is converted from the amino acid tryptophan
 The best Sources of Vitamin B3 are liver and other organ
meats, poultry ,fish and peanuts. All of which have both
niacin and tryptophan
 The richest sources of vitamin B3 are fish, tuna, salmon, and
halibut
 Yeast, dried beans and peas, wheat germ, whole grains,
avocados, dates, figs and prunes are pretty good sources of
niacin
 Milk and eggs are good because of their levels of tryptophan
 The milling and processing of whole grains can remove up
90% of the niacin

 People eat a lot of sugar, refined and processed food
need more B3
 People consuming alcohol and not having enough protein
need more B3
 People with diabetes, glaucoma, any liver disease or
peptic ulcers need more B3
 Adult male need 16mg
 Adult female need 14mg
 Kids 4-8 years old need 8mg, Kids 9-13 years old need
12mg
