time before now. The simple past is the basic form of past tense in
English. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant
past and action duration is not important.
EXAMPLES :
• You played the piano yesterday.
• She cooked dinner
• We walked to school
• They played the piano
We use the auxiliary verb to do , but we need the past simple tense
which is did and the infinitive form of verb .
For example:
Did she talk to him this morning?
Did he work on the farm last year?
We also use the past simple tense of the auxiliary verb to do which is did and we
add not to it, contracting it into didn’t plus the infinitive form of the verb.
EXAMPLES:
• They didn’t walk to school this morning.
• He didn’t take a trip last summer.
USE 1: COMPLETED ACTION IN THE PAST
Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a
specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the
specific time
EXAMPLES:
• Last night , I watched televisión.
• He washed his car.
We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past. These
actions happen 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on.
EXAMPLES:
• I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
• I went to France, I bought a camera and I took some photographs.
FUNCTION: USING THE SIMPLE PAST TO DESCRIBE A
VACATION
FOR EXAMPLE:
Last year during my vacation time I went to cartagena, I stayed for a week in my sister's house.
There, I visited many interesting places and I met many people from different countries. I
travelled with my girlfriend and we really enjoyed the trip. We visited san felipe de baraja’s
castle which is a historical fort that spanish people built many years ago. We also visited the
“ciudad amurallada” and the “centro histórico” of the city; that was a very exciting experience
because we learnt very much. One of the things I liked the most, was the sea, the weather was
very sunny and hot. We swam a lot during our last days before returning. When we came back,
we told to our parents about the experience and we were very happy for our holydays.

The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past. A
duration is a longer action often indicated by expressions such as: for two years, for
five minutes, all day, all year, etc.
EXAMPLES:
• We waited the bus for one hour.
• He lived in Piura for five years.
The Simple Past can also be used to describe a habit which stopped in the past. It
can have the same meaning as "used to." To make it clear that we are talking about
a habit, we often add expressions such as: always, often, usually, never, when I was
a child, when I was younger, etc.
EXAMPLES:
• Carlos studied French when I was a child.
• She used to ride bicycle.
