AEROSOL
Glass Metals
1) Uncoated Glass 1) Tin-plated Steel
CONTAINERS
2) Coated Glass 2) Aluminum
3) Stainless Steel
GLASS CONTAINERS

• These are preferred due to their aesthetic property and

absence of incompatibility.
• These are limited to products having lower pressure.
• These are used for topical and mdi aerosols.
• The uncoated glass containers are less costly and have high
clarity.
• The coated glass containers have a plastic coating which
prevents the glass from shattering.
METAL CONTAINERS
• Tin-plated Steel containers: These consist of a sheet of
steel plate which is coated with tin by electrolytic process.
These are light weight and relatively inexpensive and are
generally used in topical aerosols.
• Aluminum Containers: These are mostly used in MDIs
and many topical aerosols. The material is light weight and
less reactive than other metals and have greater safety
against leakage, incompatibility and corrosion.
• Stainless steel Containers: Stainless steel is used when the
container must be chemically resistant to the product
concentrate. The main limitation of these containers is their
high cost.

VALVES

• A VALVE IS A DEVICE THAT REGULATES,

DIRECTS OR CONTROLS THE FLOW OF A
FLUID (GASES, LIQUIDS, FLUIDIZED
SOLIDS, OR SLURRIES) BY OPENING,
CLOSING, OR PARTIALLY OBSTRUCTING
VARIOUS PASSAGEWAYS.

TYPES OF
VALVES
Metering Valves
CONTINUOUS SPRAY VALVE

• These are mainly used for topical aerosols

• These consist of :
 Mounting Cap: Made from tin plated steel or brass
 Housing (Body): Made of Nylon or Derlin and
contains an opening at point of attachment of dip tube.
 Stem: Made from Nylon or Derlin
 Gasket: Made from Buna-N and neoprene rubber
 Spring: Made from stainless steel
 Dip tube: Made from polyethylene or polypropylene.
METERING VALVES

• These are used for dispensing of potent

medication.
• These operate on the principle of a
chamber whose size determines the amount
of medication dispensed,
• Approximately 50 to 150mg ±10% of
liquid materials can be dispensed at a time
with the use of such valve.
