7
Establishing Equity in the Classroom

Across the United States, schools are continuing to become

more diverse. In order to ensure a quality education for every
student, equity in the classroom needs to be established.
Greet Students At the Door

▪ Learning students’ names shows

respect for the student as an
individual and their culture.
▪ African-American students in Seattle
Public Schools who achieved at a
high-level were found to have
positive, respectful relationships
with their teachers.

9
Create a Student-Centered Environment

▪ Flexible seating gives

students the freedom to
learn how they would like.
▪ Seating should be arranged
to foster whole-group and
small-group discussions.

10
Classroom Visuals and Celebrations

▪ Posters, bulletin boards,

and other visuals should
reflect all racial, ethnic,
and cultural backgrounds.
▪ Schools and classrooms
also need to be cognisant
of holiday celebrations.

11
Positive Body Language, Gestures, and Expressions

▪ A teacher’s behavior, and how a

teacher treats certain students, is
noticed by all students.
▪ Students need to feel valued and
appreciated. A teacher’s body
language, gestures, and expressions
toward students greatly affect how
comfortable they feel in the classroom
and the relationship with the teacher.
