ABSTRACT
Abstract
• Objections : to determine the prevalence of self
reported herpes zoster disease and vaccination in
geriatric population
• Methods : This was a cross sectional survey of
patient older than age 60 years
• Result : we surveyed 403 patients 49% african
american 47% white. The prevalence was 12,4%
overall and was significantly different among races
8% AA, 17% white. P = 0.01
• Conclusion : there is a large difference in self
reported HZ and vaccination rates among race
INTRODUCTION
Herpes zoster also known as HZ is most commonly in
shingles,is a skin condition patients who are older than
caused by the reactivation of age 50, immunocompromised
a latent varicella zoster virus or immunosuppressive.

In 2008, the advisory

Every year there are commitee on immunization
approximately 1 million practices recommended that
new cases of HZ in the all people older than age 60
united states receive the zoster
vaccination.
CONTINUE

When vaccination, the risk of having HZ , the burden of

disease, and the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia
decrease by 51%, 61% and 66%, respectively ,over 3 years

to determine the prevalence of HZ and the rate of

vaccination among older patients now that the vaccine
has been available and recommended for several years.

We hypothesized that many of the patient who meet

guidline recommendation to receive the HZ vaccine still
will not have been vaccinated
METHODS
METHODS

This was a cross sectional study of adult patients

aged 60 years and older

During the month of june and july 2010, the

research team members visited these academic
primary care practices and using a questionnaire

The survey included questions concerning age,

race, sex,educational level, vaccination
history,personal history of shingles and
witnessing someone with shingles
RESULT
DISCUSSION
This study investigated the HZ vaccination rate among the target
population during a sampling of patients at 3 different university
primary care clinics and found that the vaccination rate overall was
low.

In support of our hypothesis regarding the potensial

contribution of disease prevalence to racial differences
in vaccination rate, we found a significant difference.

In the study, cited by Advisory committee on Imunization

practices, the sample of 38,546 subject was 95 % white
and only 2 % AA
Limitations
LIMITATIONS
The limitations of our study include that all data
were self reported.
CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION
HZ vaccination rates are low, as is patients’
awareness that the HZ vaccine is recommended
for all people older than age 60.

Large differences in the vaccination rates exist

between Aas and whites, and potential reasons
for the differences are likely multifactorial.

Future research should explore the incidence

of shingles and the efficacy of vaccination in
Aas anfd other minority races.
