What are Direct and Indirect
Speech?
Direct and indirect is also known as reported
speech. Direct speech is a sentence pronounced
by the speaker directly and if the sentence is given
written quotation marks. While Indirect Speech is a
sentence that we report it to others indirectly and
without being given coma.
Example :
Reporting verb: Tono says,
Reported words ”I’m very good at English”

The Kinds of Direct and Indirect
Speech
1. Statement, is using ‘’that’’ as the conjunction
Example :
D.S. :He said, “we will go to Singapore tomorrow”
I.S. :He said that they would go to Singapore the next day.
2. Question, is using if/whether or 5W+1H as the conjunction
Example :
D.S. :Anton asked me, “what’s happening to you ? You look so
pale”
I.S. :Anton asked me what was happening to me as I looked
so pale.
3. Command, is using to or not to as the conjunction
Example :
D.S. :He told me, “wait for me !”
I.S. :He told me to wait for him.

Speech (Statement)
1. D.S. : He says, ‘’I go to school’’
I.S. : He says that he go to school
2. D.S. : He said, ‘’I go to school’’
I.S. : He said that he went to school
3. D.S. : She said, ‘’I am playing football’’
I.S. : She said that she was playing football
4. D.S. : Juan said, ‘’she has written a letter’’
I.S. : Juan said that she had written a letter
5. D.S.: She said, ‘’You went to beach yesterday’’
I.S. : She said that I had gone to beach the day before
6. D.S.: Farhan said, ‘’ Ababil will eat my lunch !’’
I.S. : Farhan said that Ababil would eat his lunch

1. D.S. : Farhan said, “Don’t close the
door!’’
I.S. : Farhan said not to close the door
2. D.S.: Syahril said, ‘’Do your homework!’’
I.S. : Syahril said to do my homework.

 D.S. : The teacher asked, “Have you finished your homework?”
 I.S. : The teacher asked the students if they had finished their
homework.
 D.S. : “Did you see my wallet?” asked Gery.
 I.S. : Gery wanted to know if I’d seen his wallet.
 D.S. : Lia asked “ are you happy now?”
 I.S. : Lia asked (me) whether I was happy at that time.
 D.S. :Yogi asked, “who is that girl?”
 I.S. : Tita asked, “where does the old man live?’’
