What is the American With Disabilities Act?

 Civil rights legislation that forbids discrimination of


people with disabilities in regards to:
 Transportation
 Public accommodations
 Employment
 Communications
 Access to local and state government programs/services
Title ll of the American With Disabilities
Act

 Titlell of the ADA refers to the protection of individuals


with disabilities against discrimination in regards to
their access to state and local government
programs/services
Disabilities Covered by the American With
Disabilities Act:

 There are many disabilities covered by the ADA, both physical


and mental impairments:
 Schizophrenia

 Learning disabilities
 Cancer

 Muscular Dystrophy (MS)


 Alcohol/drug addiction
 Individuals with missing/prosthetic limbs

Assistive Technology and Student Learning

 Assistive technology is a tool, such as


a device or type of equipment used
by individuals with disabilities to help
them accomplish an activity that is
otherwise difficult for them to
achieve.

Captioning Video

 Captioning videos can add accessibility to


videos for individuals who may have hearing
difficulties or those who are deaf.
 Captions make accessibility possible by
including text from the audio on the video so
those of who cannot follow along with the
audio, may follow along with captions.
“Alt” Tags

 An “alt” tag are texts for


images so that search engines
can interpret them.
 It useful for when images
cannot be seen from the
browser, to describe what the
image entails.
Blinking and Flashing Content

 Blinking and flashing content


should be avoided in documents
because it could be dangerous for
individuals that experience photo
sensitivities such as epilepsy, and
could trigger seizures.

 Photo sensitivity is most common in children, so it is important to


eliminate any sudden blinking or flashing in the content in which
children are exposed to.
