ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
•THE TERM WAS COINED BY THE HISTORIAN ARNOLD TOYNBEE TO REFER TO BRITISH ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT BETWEEN 1760 AND 1840.
•THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION WOULD HAVE TO BE CLASSIFIED AS
TECHNOLOGICAL, SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND CULTURALTHE TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING: THE USE OF NEW MATERIALS SUCH AS IRON AND STEEL; OF NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY
SUCH AS COAL AND NEW DRIVING FORCES SUCH AS THE STEAM ENGINE. NEW MACHINES WILL BE
INVENTED TO SPIN (SPINNING JENNY) OR TO WEAVE (THE MECHANICAL LOOM) THAT ALLOW A HUGE
INCREASE IN PRODUCTION WITH A MINIMUM EXPENDITURE OF HUMAN ENERGY.A NEW FORM OF WORK
ORGANIZATION EMERGED (FACTORY SYSTEM) THAT INVOLVES THE DIVISION OF LABOR AND A
GREATER SPECIALIZATION OF THE WORKFORCE.AMONG THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CHANGES ARE
THE GROWTH OF THE URBAN POPULATION, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SO-CALLED WORKING CLASS
AND ITS PROTEST MOVEMENTS (THE LABOR MOVEMENT), THE SPECTACULAR GROWTH OF SCIENTIFIC
AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE.
CHANGES IN AGRICULTURE
•FOR A LONG TIME THE FIELD WAS WORKED WITH VERY BASIC TOOLS, MOST OF THE PROCESSES ON
THE LAND WERE ALMOST DONE MANUALLY, MOSTLY, AND WHAT WAS COLLECTED FROM THE FIELDS
WAS FOR THE SELF-CONSUMPTION OF FARMERS
•THE LAND HAD BEEN EXPLOITED IN AN UNFENCED PLOT OF COMMON USE, MANY LANDS WERE ALSO
INTENDED FOR LIVESTOCKIT INTRODUCED TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS AND MADE THE FARMER'S JOB
EASIER AND MORE PROFITABLE
THE FIRST (FIRST INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION) FROM THE MID-EIGTEENTH CENTURY TO THE MID-
NINETEENTH, CHARACTERIZED BY THE USE OF THE STEAM ENGINE AND COAL TO MOVE THE
MACHINES. THE MAIN INDUSTRIES WERE TEXTILES (WOOL AND COTTON), MINING (COAL)
AND THE STEEL INDUSTRY. THE RAILROAD AND THE STEAM BOAT WERE THE MEANS OF
TRANSPORT CHARACTERISTC OF THIS STAGE.
ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING EVENTS DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE NINETEENTH
CENTURY WAS THE POPULATION AND COLONIZATION OF OUR LANDS, THIRTEEN MILLIONS
OF EUROPEANS WERE DISPLACED TO THE UNITED STATES, OTHERS WENT TO AUSTRALIA
AND TO SOME SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES. CALIFORNIA AND AUSTRALIA EXERCISED
SPECIAL ATTRACTION ON GOLD SEARCHERS. THIS SURPRISED MIGRATORY MOVEMENT WAS
POSSIBLE TO BE CARRIED OUT BECAUSE THE TRANSPORTATION WAS OPENED AND
FACILITATED BY THE PEASANTS, WHO DID NOT FIND WORK IN THE EUROPEAN CITY IN 1869,
THE RAILROAD WAS BUILT IN THE ISTMO OF PANAMA AND IN 1914 THE CANAL THAT JOINS
THE ATLANTIC WITH THE PACIFIC .
SOCIAL CHANGE DEMOGRAPHIC GROWTH ALTHOUGH INDUSTRIALIZATION WILL PRODUCE
ENORMOUS CHANGES IN BRITISH SOCIETY SUCH AS THE GROWTH OF THE SO-CALLED
BOURGEOIS CLASS, OR THE RURAL EXODUS RESULTING FROM THE AGRARIAM REVOLUTION,
HOWEVER, PERHAPS THE TWO MOST WORTHY OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA ARE THE
SPECTACULAR GROWTH DEMOGRAPHIC AND THE BIRTH OF A NEW AND MASSIVE
WORKING CLASS FORMED BY THE WORKERS OF THE NEW INDUSTRIES.
