FEMALE

REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
Female reproductive
system
O A female’s reproductive system provides the
biological means to produce a new
generation.The system consists of ovaries,
oviducts, the uterus, cervix and vagina.
O Female have 3 outside openings between the
legs.The vagina, urethra and anus.
O Its function is to produce eggs, receives
sperms, nourish a fertilized egg and give birth.
O The major sex hormone in females are
estrogen ang progesterone.

ORGANS
MYOMETRIUM
O is the middle layer of the uterine wall, consisting
mainly of uterine smooth muscle cells (also called
uterine myocytes), but also of supporting stromal and
vascular tissue is the middle layer of the uterine wall,
consisting mainly of uterine smooth muscle cells
(also called uterine myocytes), but also of supporting
stromal and vascular tissue.
O Its main function is to induce uterine contractions.
Contraction of the layers of smooth muscle forming
this tissue cause menstrual cramps and helps expel
a fetus during labor.
OVIDUCT
O Sometimes called Fallopian tube and
Uterine tubes.
O We have two fallopian tube , one is located
at the left side and the other one is in the
right side.
O About 4 inches (10cm) long
O Transport the fertilized egg to the uterus for
implantation.
FIMBRIAE
O It is also called fimbriae tubae
O are the finger-like projections located at the
ends of the fallopian tubes, closest to
the ovaries.
O It is connected to the ovary
O The role of this is to help eggs move from
the ovaries to the uterus.
UTERUS
O The uterus is a hollow muscular organ located in
the female pelvis between the bladder and
rectum.
O In this hollow, thick-walled organ a fertilized egg
may implant and an embryo may develop.
O Its major function is to accept a fertilized ovum
which becomes implanted into the
endometrium, and derives nourishment from
blood vessels which develop exclusively for this
purpose. The fertilized ovum becomes an
embryo, develops into a fetus and gestates until
childbirth.
OVARY
O Paired ovaries are a female’s primary
reproductive organs.
O It is located beside the uterus on each side
of the lower abdomen
O They produce oocytes (eggs) for fertilisation
and they produce the
reproductive hormones, oestrogen and
progesterone.
ENDOMETRIUM
O is the innermost lining layer of the
uterus
O Where an early embryo implants when
conditons are right.
O One of the stars of the female
reproductive system,playing key roles
during menstrual cycle as well as
during pregnancy.
O Also called the “endometrial lining” the tissue
it’s made up of serves as the “wallpaper” of
the uterus or womb.
BLADDER
O Positioned under and slightly forward
of the uterus.
O the urinary bladder is a hollow elastic
organ that functions as the body's
urine storage tank
CERVIX
O The cervix is the lower part of the uterus
situated between the external os (external
orifice) and internal os (internal orifice).
O The function of the cervix is to allow flow of
menstrual blood from the uterus into the
vagina, and direct the sperms into the
uterus during intercourse. The opening of
the cervical canal is normally very narrow.
O Also known as “the neck of the uterus”.
URETHRA(URETHA)
O The female urethra begins at the bottom of
the bladder, known as the neck. It extends
downward, through themuscular area of the
pelvic floor
O The urethra is the tube that carries urine from
the bladder to outside of the body. In males, it
has the additional function of ejaculating semen
when the man reaches orgasm. When the penis
is erect during sex, the flow of urine is blocked
from the urethra, allowing only semen to be
ejaculated at orgasm.
VAGINA
O Also known as “birth canal” for the baby
during birth.
O It is located in front of the rectum and
behind the bladder. The upper region for the
vagina connects to the cervix of the uterus.
The vaginal channel is narrowest at the
upper and lower ends.
O It provides a channel for the semen that
enters the uterus, and for the blood that
comes out of the body during menstruation.
O Provides an outlet for menstrual blood.
O Facilitates sexual intercourse
O Helps in sperm function (by capacitation of
sperm)
O Acidic vaginal secretions help to prevent
infection.
O Forms the birth canal or pathway for the baby to
come out
Female External Reproductive
Organs
Mons Pubis
O This rounded pad of fat covers the
underlying bone, the pubic symphysis.
Clitoris
O Analogous to male’s penis, this small organ
is sensitive to sexual stimulation.
Labium Minor
O Also part of the vulva, these inner skin folds
lie along the entrance to the vagina.
Labium Major
O These fleshy fat podded skin folds form part
of the vulva-external female genitals.
FACTS:
O The male and female reproductive organs or
gonads differ in the number of sex cells(also
known as gametes)produced. A male can
continually produce millions of sperm cells
from puberty until his death provided that he
is healthy.
O A female produces approximately one egg
every 28 days from puberty until the
menopausal stage, a period when she stops
producing eggs.
O The female egg cell or ovum(plural, ova) is the
largest among the body cells.
