CCSD Special Schools

Public Law 94-142


 Public Law 94-142 formerly known as the Education for All Handicapped Children
Act.
 It was originally passed by congress in 1975.
 Public Law 94-142 was revised in 1990, 1997, and 2004.
 It was passed to ensure that all children with disabilities would receive free,
appropriate public education just as all the other children.
 Public law 94-142 was set to accomplish four purposes:
 "to assure that all children with disabilities have available to them…a free appropriate
public education which emphasizes special education and related services designed to
meet their unique needs"
 "to assure that the rights of children with disabilities and their parents…are protected"
 "to assist States and localities to provide for the education of all children with
disabilities"
 "to assess and assure the effectiveness of efforts to educate all children with
disabilities"
I.D.E.A.
 Public Law 92-142 was revised in 1990 when it was renamed to Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
 Autism and traumatic brain injury added as discrete disabilities.
 Social work and rehabilitation counseling now considered related services
 IDEA established the individualized transition plan (ITP).
 General educators are required to participate in IEP.
 Students with disabilities are to be involved in and have acces to the deneral education
curriculum.
 IDEA is composed of six major components:
 A free appropriate public education (FAPE)
 The least restrictive environment (LRE).
 An i8ndividualized education program (IEP).
 Procedural due process.
 Nondiscriminatory assessment.
 Parental Participation.
Individualized Education Programs (IEP)

 Individualized educational programs are mandated by Public Law 94-142 known as


IDEA.
 Individualized training programs are learning plans provided to each student with
disabilities.
 IEP’s include a description of instruction that will be provided in order for the student
to meet their personalized goal.
 The individualized education program will also have the assessment techniques that
will be used to understand the student’s progress.
 Individualized training programs are usually completed by the special education or
inclusion teacher, and the general education teacher. Other members usually participate
as well, such as school administrators, the student’s parents or guardians, and the school
psychologist.
John F. Miller School
 John F. Miller School is part of Clark County School District, and it specializes
in helping students with special needs.
 John F. Miller School helps people ages 3-22 with specialized needs .
 This school strives to provide students with the specialized education they need
in the least restrictive environment.
 John F. Miller School has the motto “All Children Can Learn”.
 The school believes that each and every student has the ability to learn,
therefore they must be given the opportunity to reach their maximum potential.
Helen J. Stewart
 Helen J. Stewart is a Title I school. This means it receives federal funds designed to
assist schools.
 This school’s main focus is to provide students with communicational, social,
vocational, and functional academic skills.
 Helen J. Stewart helps people in between the ages of six and twenty two.
 This school focuses on those that need instruction in their daily living, communication,
and those who have transitional needs.
 All the students attending Helen J. Stewart have an IEP.
Miley Achievement Center

 Miley Achievement Center is a Title I school whose mission is to educate students


academically, behaviorally, and emotionally.
 This school instructs their children using a Level System. Children receive perks based
on grades and behavior.
 Miley Achievement Center believes in regarding good behavior instead of punishing
bad behavior.
 This school attends to students in k-12.
 The school sets Elementary goals, Middle school goals, and High school goals
Variety School
 Variety school strives to provide safe and –positive learning community that
nurtures vocational and academic growth.
 Their goal is to have all students be able to transition into the workforce,
independent living, and post-secondary education.
 This school is for disabled children.
 Variety school is teamed up with the Cleveland clinic in order to provide
teachers and staff further training on how to help children with Autism and
other special needs.
Homebound

 Homebound services are provided to children that are unable to attend school.
 Homebound services attends to children in. grades K-12.
 This service provides instruction to children that can not attend school due to injury,
illness, or other medically related condition.
 Homebound services attends to kids through instructional sessions online or at home.
 Homebound services also helps CCSD schools with individualized programming in
home settings.

Least Restrictive Environment

 Least restrictive environment was mandated by IDEA.


 Children with disabilities should be educated with children that are non disables as
much as possible.
 This can include a child with a disability spending part of their day in a general
education classroom and the rest in a separate self contained classroom.
 If a student needs additional aid in order to be able to be in a general education
classroom this aid must be provided to them.
