 Manchester United Soccer Club
Manchester United Soccer Club (MUSC) located in Manchester, New Hampshire, was formed
in 1992 for promoting recreational players to a higher level of competition and preparing
them for the State Olympic Development Program and/or high school teams.

The club's board of directors decided to sponsor a summer invitational soccer tournament to
generate additional revenue for the Club.

Nicolette Larson tournament director is responsible for organizing the club's first summer
tournament.

Q1. Make a list of the major deliverables for the project and use them to develop a draft of
the work breakdown structure for the tournament that contains at least three levels of
detail. What are the major deliverables associated with hosting an event such as a soccer
tournament?
Major Deliverables:
•Develop WBS for the project.
•Develop Project Plan.
•Estimate the cost of the tournament.
•Estimate the Fund for MUSC that can be raised from the tournament.

Q2. How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred during the
first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?

•Nicolette did not had prior experience in conducting tournament. WBS would facilitate
evaluation of cost estimation, scheduling and resource allocation for the Tournament
project.

•Organizational Breakdown structure (OBS) can be developed from WBS, and would
facilitate allocation of Roles and responsibilities to MUSC members and staff.

•From the cost estimation, it is possible to evaluate the feasibility of the project (whether
conducting tournament would generate revenue for MUSC).

•Communication plan can be developed from WBS for effective communication between
different teams thus enabling smooth and effective handling of the activities.

•WBS created for this tournament can be used for future projects and can be improved by
incorporating the learning from this tournament.

Q3. Where can Nicolette find additional information to help her develop a WBS for the
tournament?

•From historical data if available from public channels such as Internet, public libraries,
sport magazines etc.

•Additional information can also be available through consultants having expertise in

conducting tournaments.

Q4. How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates for the
tournament? Why would this be useful information?

By using WBS, to arrive at work packages, would enable Nicolette to estimate the effort,
resource skill level requirement for completing the work package. Identifying these two
parameters for every work package would enable Nicolette to estimate the cost for each of
the work packages and hence the total cost of the project.

Total cost of the Project would enable Nicolette to evaluate the feasibility of the project and
estimate the amount of fund that can be generated for MUSC. WBS would also help in
creating the base plan for the project and evaluate the project performance during and at
the completion of the project.
