Protecting biodiversity

By-Natalie Davis-Lopez
What is Biodiversity?

-Biodiversity is the infrastructure that supports all

living things on earth.
This includes all cycles and systems of the earth
that help living things thrive.Or in other words
ecosystems, and habitats.
Climate Change affects
The effects of climate change are altering multiple habitats and
numerous ecosystems. Some of which have a large impact on not
only humans but animal life, and plant life.
-The Three habitats that have been drastically affected are Oceanic
habitats, Forest habitats, and Snow habitats
Oceanic Habitats
-The Ocean is beginning to acidify due to the amount of CO2 in the
atmosphere. While also expanding and growing warmer.

This causes the animals that live in oceanic ecosystems to no longer be able to
survive in the changing water conditions. The creatures directly affected are,
Coral and shellfish. And any other creature with a calcified shell. It would also
cause coral reefs ,an important ecosystem to many creatures, to dissipate.
Oceanic Habitats cont.
-The loss of the organisms that are important to the oceans
ecosystem, would cause a lot of other creature such as fish and
mammals to lose their food sources.
-Other factors such as littering and large quantities of plastic in
oceans speed up the acidifying process. And also harm the creatures
in the ocean.

Forest Habitats
-Forests are becoming more prone to longer warm seasons and
shorter cold seasons which cause a lot of problems for plant life.
Making infestations more prone.
-ALso the amount of droughts, flash floods, and wildfires have
caused harm to animal populations, and geography.
Forest Habitats cont.
● Up to 90 percent of amphibians, 86 percent of birds and 80 percent of
mammals could potentially become locally extinct in the Miombo
Woodlands in Southern Africa.
● The Amazon could lose 69 percent of its plant species.
● In southwest Australia 89 percent of amphibians could become locally
extinct.
● 60 percent of all species are at risk of localised extinction in Madagascar.
● The Fynbos in the Western Cape Region of South Africa, which is
experiencing a drought that has led to water shortages in Cape Town, could
face localized extinctions of a third of its species, many of which are
unique to that region.-

Snow/Glacial Habitats
- The rising temperature is causing the glaciers and sea ice to melt. Not only
causing sea levels to rise but also displacing a lot of the animals that live in
these environments. Also making food more scarce.
- THe faster seasonal melting and freezing of the glaciers and mountain snow
caps would cause the production of good quality water to decrease.
Snow/Glacial Habitats cont.
-Animals such as polar bears, walruses, and seals are beginning to
become endangered. The lack of sea ice and the changed migration
of the fish they eat are causing many of them to die of starvation.
What can we do?
Small steps:

1. Bird feeders/Welcome wildlife

2. Recycle
3. Don’t litter
4. Leave wildlife in the wild
5. Keep domestic pets indoors as much as possible

Big steps:

1. Volunteer time
2. Vote
3. DOnate
My action plan
1. Make a recycling bin for the house
a. According to the University of Central Oklahoma, when manufacturers
use recycled paper, they cut air pollution by 73 percent and water
pollution by 35 percent.
b. Using recycled glass decreases mining wastes by 80 percent and air
pollution by 20 percent
2. Set it up by the trash can
3. After the christmas presents are open recycle the paper and plastic
4. Take it to the local post office to recycle
