Let Us Remember:

 A positive, finite decimal s is said to be written in


scientific notation if it is expressed as a product
of d x 10n , where d is a positive finite decimal
greater than or equal 1 and less than 10, and n is
an integer.

*Hint* If you look at the farther left digit it will be your d and then you
shall count the amount of 0’s there are to be the value n. If your number
begins on the right side of the decimal begin where the first non zero digit
starts on the right side.
 6000 = 6 x 103

Problems with Different Sized Magnitudes
of Decimals

 We need to determine the difference in the


populations of Texas and North Dakota. In 2012,
Texas had a population of about 26 million people,
and North Dakota had a population of about 6.9 ×
104.
 How do we go about this?
 Before the MATH ! We must make sure
the magnitudes are of values are the
same.
 Texas pop. = 26 million = 2.6 x107
 North Dakota pop. = 6.9 × 104
 Let us EQUAL out the magnitudes of
the decimals
 Are the magnitudes of decimal the
same?  Texas pop. = 26 million = 2.6 x107
 107 = 104
 7 does NOT equal 4  We know when multiplying two values
with exponents we find the sum of the
 NO exponents to find the product
 10a x10b = 10a+b
 107 = 104 x 103

 2.6 x (103 x 104) = (2.6 x 103) x 104


Texas pop. = 2600 x 104
We need to determine the difference in the populations of Texas and North Dakota. In 2012,

American Landfill
In 2010, Americans generated 2.5 × 108
tons of garbage. There are about 2,000
landfills in the United States. Assuming
that each landfill is the same size and that 2.5 × 108 2.5 108

determine how many tons of garbage were
sent to each landfill in 2010 = 1.25 × 105

Knowns:
Amount of Landfills= 2000, in scientific

American Landfill
Actually, not all garbage went to landfills. Some of it was 2.5 × 108 - 8.5 x 107 = (2.5 × 101) x 108 - 8.5 x 107
recycled and composted. The amount of recycled and
= (25 – 8.5 ) x 107
composted material accounted for about 85 million tons
of the 2.5 × 108 tons of garbage. Given this new = 16.5 x 107
