Objectives

• After completing this module, you will be able to:

• State the need for VoLTE
• Discuss the VoLTE architecture

4 RA47071EN70GLA0 © Nokia Solutions and Networks 2015

What is VoLTE

• LTE (Long term Evolution) aka 4G, is the wireless communications

standard developed by 3GPP standardization, to offer high speed
with low latency.
• LTE is Packet-switched network only
• LTE network architecture does not include the traditional 2G/3G voice
services

• Voice over LTE is the solution to provide the capability to provide

voice and SMS along side the LTE mobile broadband
• Real time traffic
• Quality of Service
• Interoperability to existing CS voice network

LTE impact on voice
Setting the scene for voice in the LTE era

Baseline: A voice solution is needed for an LTE

smartphone connected to an LTE network, otherwise it
will have connect to a 2G/3G network for voice services. LTE

The options for voice are: UE

Product Highlights
Open TAS
AS AS Nokia Networks
Border Control
• Connects the operators LTE access to the
IMS core network (1) and provides also
connectivity to the peering IP / IMS
SIP (ISC) networks (2).
• Border Control functionality is an integral
CSCF part of the Nokia Networks Open Core
CFX- System.
5000 • Border Control for VoLTE is based on
IMS Core decomposed architecture where BCF
(Border Control Function) is provided with
CFX-5000 product and BGF (Border
Gateway Function) is provided with Open
BGW (MGW) product.
BGW • Border Control for VoLTE supports also the
3GPP Release 10 enhanced SRVCC
functions Access Transfer Control Function
SIP (Gm) (ATCF) and Access Transfer Gateway
Function (ATGW).

VoLTE Evolution from existing CS network

• Step by step deployments can be made to offer a clear

evolution path from traditional 2G/3G network to the 4G VoLTE
network.
• LTE network offering data only & CS Fallback to provide 2G/3G
voice services

• One Voice, i.e. VoLTE providing voice over 4G, and IMS
Centralized Services (ICS) using the IMS offering rich media
solution

• SRVCC for handover for a 4G call to 2G/3G network in low 4G

coverage
