As you were thinking of
solutions to the puzzles,
what was going on inside
you? What organ was
working?
1. What is the brain and
how does it work?

2. What happens inside your

brain when you learn
something new?
THE HUMAN BRAIN
The human brain is a complex organ in charge of
intelligence, senses, movement, and behavior. The halves
of the brain – the “right brain” and the “left brain” –
perform different functions and communicate information
with each other through a band of nerves that connects
them. The right side of the brain controls most of the
movement and functions of the left side of the body, and
the left side of the brain controls most of the movement
and functions of the right side of the body.
THE HUMAN BRAIN
You may hear that someone is a “right-brained” or “left-
brained” individual. This is called brain dominance,
meaning that an individual has a natural preference for
processing information on one side of the brain. The right
side is the intuitive or spontaneous side, while the left side
is logical. Knowing an individual’s brain dominance can
help you understand his/her “ways” of thinking, behavior,
speaking and functioning.
RIGHT BRAIN
The characteristics of right brain consist of creativity, the
talent to see patterns, spatial cognizance, and the
understanding of how things relate to one another in
different contexts. Individuals of this brain dominance are
good in distinguishing faces, places and objects. They seem
to have capability for “out-of-the-box” thinking, art (as well
as ability to draw, paint, sculpt etc.), imaginative thinking
and music (including the ability to play instruments with
ease or to identify a song melody and play it back upon
“hearing it”.
LEFT BRAIN
The characteristics of left brain include a knack for
language, analytical skills, and mathematical
concepts such as time and sequence. Individuals
with this brain dominance are good with letters,
numbers and words. They seem to have the skills for
language (including reading, writing and
speaking), mathematics, logic and reasoning and
science.

FUN FACTS ABOUT YOUR "SIDES"

• The right side of your body is controlled by the

left side of your brain.
• The left side of your body is controlled by the
right side of your brain.
• Most people are left-brain dominate, even
people who are left-handed writers.
• The left side of your brain controls speech,
reading, writing, and math.
• The right side deals with spatial relationships,
abstractions, and your feelings.
