DEFINITION OF TERMS

E-Commerce- is the activity of buying and selling of products on online services


over the Internet. It draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic
funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet Marketing, online transaction
processing, electronic data interchange(EDI), Inventory manage systems, and
automated data collection systems.
DEFINITION OF TERMS

Internet – A global computer network providing a variety of information and


communication facilities, Consisting of interconnected networks using standardized
communication tools.
Internet of things – the interconnection via the internet of computing devices
embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data.
Internet Service provider – is an organization that provides services for accessing, using,
or participating in the internet. Internet Service providers may be organized in various
forms, such as commercial, community-owned, non-profit, or otherwise privately owned.

Network – is a collection of computers, servers, mainframes, network devices, peripherals, or other


devices connected to one another to allow sharing of data.
Bandwidth or channel capacity, - is an expression of how much data- text, voice, video and so on that
can be sent through a communications channel in a given time.
Broadband – High speed connections
Data transmission speeds are data transmitted in characters or collection of bits
Kbps – Kilobits per second 1000bits/second
Mbps – Megabits per second 1million bits/second
Gbps – Gigabits per second 1 billion bits/second

• Download – is the transmission of data from a remote computer to a local computer.


• Upload – is the transmission od data from a local computer to a remote computer
NARROWBAND(Dial-up MODEM): Low speed but inexpensive, uses
(dial-up connections) – use of telephone modems to connect computers to internet
Modem - is a device that sends and receives data over telephone lines to and from
computers

Web Browser – (commonly referred to as a browser) is a software application


for accessing information on the World Wide Web.
World Wide Web – also called as the Web, is an information space where
documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resources
locators(URLs), Interlinked by hypertext links, and accessible via the Internet.

Communication satellite – a space station that transmits radio waves called microwaves
from earth based stations.(1-5Mbps)
Wireless Connections(Wi-Fi,3G,4G) nowadays are the most popular connection
Wireless networks uses radio waves to transmit data(used in laptops, tablets and
smartphones)
Wi-Fi (Short for Wireless Fidelity) – is a name given to any of several standards – so
called 802.11 standards – set by the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers, can
transmit data up to 54Mbps for 300-500 feet from an access point

• Access point – a station that sends and receives data to and from a Wi-Fi network, it
can transmit up to 140Mbps. Used mostly in public places such as airports, hotels,
libraries, convention centers, and fast-food facilities and restaurants that offers
hotspots(public access to Wi-Fi networks)
• 3G(3rd Generation) – is loosely defined as high-speed wireless technology that does
not need access points because it uses existing cellphone system.
• 4G(4th Generation) – is a successor to 3G and 2G standards with aim to provide a
wide range of data rates up to ultra-broadband(gigabit-speed) mostly in
Smartphones and Apple IPhone(4S and 5G)

Smart phone – a mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a
touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded
applications.
Internet service providers(ISPS)- is a local, regional, or national organization that provides access to the
internet for a fee.

Commercial Online Services – is a members only company that provides not only Internet access but other
specialized content as well as news, games, and financial data. Two of the most famous subscriber-only
commercial online services are AOL(America Online) and MSN(Microsoft Network).
Wireless Internet Service Providers(WISP) – enables users with computers containing wireless modems –
mostly laptops/notebooks/tablets and web enabled smartphones and personal digital assistants to gain
access to the internet.

HOW DOES THE INTERNET WORK?

The Internet or International network is basically a huge network that connects


hundreds of thousands of smaller networks(educational, commercial, nonprofit,
military organizations, as well as individuals.

• Server or Host computer – is a central computer supplying data or services
requested of it.
