Summary
The book The Landry News creates the scene of
Cara Larson in a new school. She’s a pretty quiet
girl who enjoys writing. She’s one of the students
who ends up in Mr. Larson’s class. He has a
reputation for being the worst teacher in her
school. His teaching philosophy is that the
students learn from each other, so there’s no
teaching in his classroom. However, one day Cara
posts the first edition of her newspaper The
Landry News and it catches the eyes of students,
even Mr. Larson. There’s a section where Cara
writes about Mr. Larson which creates some
unexpected things to happen in the school.
Activity 1: Let’s Create Our Own Newspaper!
1. The class will read the book as a
group. Then once the class is
done reading the book, the
students will create their own
newspaper.
2. All About Me worksheet will be
provided to the students.
3. They will be asked to fill out the
worksheet and share it to the
class

Activity 2: Play
1. The whole class will read The Landry
News as a group.
2. Once the class is done reading the book.
The teacher will separate the students
into 5 different groups.
3. Each group will be responsible for acting
out the chapters they were assigned by
the teacher.
a. Each group will have four chapters that they
are responsible to act out.
4. The students can bring props or create
them to make their play extra special.
Activity 2: Play Continued
Group 1: Chapters 1-4
Group 2: Chapter 5-8
Group 3: Chapters 9-12
Group 4: Chapter 13-16
Group 5: Chapters 17-20
● Once the students get into their groups,
they have to write a script of what they
are presenting to the class.
● The script has to be approved by the
teacher.
● Once the script is approved then the
students are able to practice their play.
● Once every groups scripts have been
approved and the groups had a chance to
practice, then the students can present.
Activity 3: Dictionary
1. The students will read the
books as a group.
2. While reading the students are
asked to underline the
unfamiliar words. Then once
the class is done reading a
chapter, then the students will
create a dictionary.
3. The dictionary template will be
given to the students prior
reading the book.
Activity 4: Picture Book
1. Once the students are done reading The Landry News, they will create a picture
book.
2. The teacher will hand out a template that will help them create their own
version of the book.
3. Materials the students will need:
a. Picture Book Template
b. Colored Pencils/Pencil
c. The Landry News book reference
