3 INTRODUCTION

Called the “Three R’s” of waste

management, this waste heirarchy is the
guidance susggested for a sustainable life.

 Cut down the amount of waste

thrown away.
Conserve natural resources,
landfill space and energy.
4 THE THREE “R’S”
Reduce – Try to reduce the
waste you produce as this is
the way to help environment
if you cannot stop producing
waste!
Reuse – Think of ways in
which you could reuse
something thus reducing the
demand of raw materials.
Recycle – Enables materials
thrown away to be used
again by making them into
new products .
5 THE FIRST ‘R’- REDUCE

“If there is less waste, then there is lesser to

reuse or recycle”.
Purchase
durable goods

Reduce

Buy toxic
Use less raw
free
materials
products
6 THE SECOND ‘R’- REUSE
Repurposing doesn’t require the additional expenditure
of resources being melt down to create them.
Reduces demand of raw materials.
Extends the products needed to be recycled or throwed
away.

Reuse boxes Repair items

Use durable mugs
Reuse Refill bottles
Rechargable batteries
Donate
Use cloth
towels Use refill pens
7 Benefits of reducing and reusing

Prevents pollution by reducing the need to harvest new

raw material.
Saves energy.
Reduces green house gas emission that contribute to
climate change.
Saves money.
Reduces the amount of waste to be recycled.
Allow products to be used to their full extent.
8 THE THIRD ‘R’- RECYCLE

To recycle something means to transform it

again into raw material so that it can be
shaped into a new item.

Less landfills and incinerators

Keeps resources
Creates jobs
Benefits of
recycling
Less pollutants Supplies raw materials

Saves energy
9 COMPOSTING
Composting is another way of recycling.
It is the controlled biological decomposition of organic
matter such as food and yard waste into humus.
Reduces pesticides Produces humus
and fertilizers Reduces plant diseases
Protects soil Benefits of Less landfills
composting

Less pollution Increases beneficial organisms

10 CONCLUSION
We cannot stop waste production entirely, but
everyone can make a significant contribution.
Think before you bin! It saves energy and
natural resources, helps to reduce pollution
and reduces the need for landfill.
