• Change the layer name


• Switch from Data View to Layer View
• Set the format and size of the paper for printing
• Set the projection of the map

Start ArcMap, Shift to layout view and format the “Page
and Print Set up” to open the presentation as shown below

To determine the number of countries on the
African continent, Right click on the layer of
“Africa_BaseMap” and Click on “Open Attribute
Table”

The attribute of the table will open. You can read
that there are 57 countries on the African
Continent.

Editing Data in
ArcMap
Copying a Shape file

Create a copy from the Shape file of “Africa_BaseMap”.
Right Click on it, Select Data and Click on "Export Data”

Look for “Output feature class:” and click on the
appropriate folder, you intend to store our Output

When the appropriate folder is open, Look for
“Name” and type “Africa_Pop” save the new shape
file

You are back to the Export Data Window. Confirm
that your shape file was properly named

Please add the new layer to the currently displayed
map

Editing Data in
ArcMap –
Add Variables

Open the Attribute table of the Layer
“Africa_Pop”

When the “Attribute table” Appears. Click to get
the menu of “Table Option”. Then Click on Add
Field

Create a new Variable “Pop2014”, set the “Type” of
the variable to be “Double”. Validate by clicking on
“OK”

The new Variable “Pop2014” is added to your
Attribute table.

The new Variable average growth rate for the period 2010-
2015“AGRT_1015” is added to your Attribute table.

Variables were added but you cannot make any edit of
data in the modified “Attribute table”. You need to
activate the “Editor”.

Open the menu of the “Editor” and
Click to select “Start Editing”.

After you right click of the layer of “Africa_Pop”, select
“Open Attribute Table” and in “Table Options” Select
“Find and Replace”

In the Window of “Find and Replace” type in “Find
What” Sudan then click on “Find Next”.

Sudan is found in the “Attribute Table”

Enter the
Pop of 2014
and the
growth rate
2010/2015
for Sudan,
Algeria and
Egypt

Save the updating of your data

When back to your map, right click on the
layer “Africa_Pop” and select “Properties”

Set the layer properties to “Symbology”, Select the
“Value” to read “AGRT_1015”. Set the grouping to
three with “Classify”. Complete task with “OK”.

The countries for which data on total population and
growth rate were entered are shown on the map which
display the average annual growth rate.

You can generate table to preform quickly the data entry.
You will have to create a new table for data entry in Excel

In “Table options”, select “Export” to create a new table
which will contain all the variable of the “Attribute Table”
of “Africa_Pop”

Name the New table (data file) as “Africa_Pop”. Make
sure you stored it in the Folder “02 data” and the data
type is “dBase Table”. Conclude by saving the file with
“Save”.

Confirm with “OK” your decision to create a new data
file

Back to the “Attribute table”, close it.

In opening the “Explorer” you can see the file export as
a dbase file. Click on it and it will open in “Excel”.
