Piping and Instrumentation

Diagrams
Jessica Warrack
What are P&ID’s?
● A side view representation of
all equipment and
instrumentation in a plant
● Most detailed flowsheet,
contains all process
information, engineering
data and controls
● Usually not to scale as that is
demonstrated in other
diagrams
Process Components
● Major and auxiliary equipment and motors
○ Clear and predefined set of abbreviations (P=pump, etc…)
○ Clear pipe number scheme
○ Standard symbols for equipment
● Flow lines, bypasses, purge lines, drain lines
● Pipelines sizes and specs (material of construction, diameter, schedule, content, insulation)
● Valves coded with specific type (shut off, safety, relief)
● Operating conditions when applicable (volume, temperature, consistency, pH, pressure)
● Design capacity, size and setpoint for safety relief valves
● Clearly identified entrance and exit of utilities and exits to waste treatment facilities
Equipment Symbols Examples
Instrumentation Components
● Instrumentation loops detailed according to
Instrumentation Systems and Automation Society (ISA)
standards
○ Distinguish between local, remote, panel mounted
instrumentation
● Identify indicators, controllers and recorders
● Control loops identified by function and number
Final Notes
● May be useful to separate components by
layer when making CAD file
○ Easy to edit specific components (ie:
valves, instrumentation) without affecting
other components
○ Easier to find specific components in the
file when others are analyzing/editing
