How did Slavery become tied to race?

By Jacques, Will, Gabe, Parneill, Me’Shach, Hailey, Alvin

Introduction:
- Our presentation is to help explain how and when slavery became tied to race instead of
different factors such as religion.
- We will be talking about some different examples of events that happened which contributed
to this.
- This took place in the Americas and in the Atlantic ocean.
- This all took place around 1650.
- We will be talking about also who was involved with these different changes to Slavery.
The minority race split:
By 1650, Slavery became based on color and not on religion. For
a long time both whites and blacks worked together under the power of
the wealthy white people, but over time the minorities started to rebel
against the people in power so they split the white workers and the black
workers so they couldn't fight back. They gave the white workers more
power, and made the the black people perminitally enslaved.

- These picture show how slavery changed from white and black
slaves
- Than over time Africans were brought from africa 500 at a time
against their will in ships
Giddy multitude/Bacon’s Rebellion

The giddy multitude was a group of Slaves, armed White indentured servants and armed
low class landless whites who were unsatisfied with their treatment by the elite whites. In
1627 The elites were fearful that the giddy multitude would join together and
overthrow/overpower them. Because they were afraid of the multitude the elites sought to
find a common enemy with the landless whites and the indentured servants, (the Native
Americans). By defeating the natives in what is called bacon’s rebellion they could separate
the low class whites and the slaves by making the whites feel more superior to the enslaved
blacks and separated/ found the difference between the groups; through skin color.

The Declaration

Announced at the Virginia General Assembly in 1705, It was

official that all non-Christian humans brought to the country would be
forced into slavery. This was when race based slavery became an
accepted law. This also stated that once you were a slave, you were
always a slave, even if you were baptized.

“All servants imported and brought into the Country. . . who were not Christians in their
native Country. . . shall be accounted and be slaves. All Negro, mulatto and Indian slaves
within this dominion. . . shall be held to be real estate. If any slave resists his master. . .
correcting such slave, and shall happen to be killed in such correction. . . the master shall be
free of all punishment. . . as if such accident never happened.”
Other ways Slavery became tied to race

There were other other ways that slavery became tied to race
are shown in the infographic on the right. The europeans
were able to defeat the indigenous people of Africa and then
started to use them as slaves to help them gather sugar.
There was very few amounts of the indentured British
servants. This lead to these natives being used to harvest
these crops. Therefore slavery became more tied to race
through this.
Conclusion

In conclusion slavery became based on race around the time of 1650. This
race based slavery became official in America. There were a few factors that
contributed to this. Slavery used to be both whites and blacks. Then the blacks
began to rebel to this slavery. Then they became singled out and were the
only ones used for slavery. Also the announcement at the Virginia General
assembly, this all was confirmed by the government that it would be based on
race and not fully religion.
