History of CS
• From Lloyd coffee shop
• The LR for the Registry of
Shipping was set up in
1760 by Edward Lloyd’s

• give merchants and underwriters recorded

information on the quality of their vessels
• Now, more than 50 classification societies (CS)

BIRO KLASIFIKASI INDONESIA

3
What is CS?
• Ship Classification is necessary to ensure ship is
built & maintenaed properly for hazard & risks
involve in maritime trading.
• Classification scheme covers:
- Standard & rules for design, construction &
service of Ship
- Design & Construction are controlled to
assure compliance to rules. Certificate of
conformity is issued

BIRO KLASIFIKASI INDONESIA

4
Purpose & Objective
• to provide classification and
statutory services and assistance
to the maritime industry and
regulatory bodies as regards
maritime safety and pollution
prevention.

• to verify the structural strength and integrity of essential

parts of the ship’s hull and its systems, etc to maintain
essential services on board.

BIRO KLASIFIKASI INDONESIA

5
Service & Product of CS

• Classification (Ship & Offshore)

• Statutory (ISM, ISPS,MLC,PSC,EF)
• Commercial (Marine, Industry,
Energy)

BIRO KLASIFIKASI INDONESIA

6
Why neeed CS?
• Business pressure from
clients
• classification is an absolute
prerequisite for ship
registration and insurance
cover.
• Neither charterers nor
cargo interests will utilize
vessels that are not in class
and registered.

Ships to be classed
• PM No. 61 thn 2014 Bab 2 Pasal 2:
Indonesian flagged ship shall be classed with following
criteria:
 LBP > 20 m OR,
 Gross Tonnage > 100 GT OR,
 Power > 250 HP
• What if ship other than this need to be
classed?

Scope of Classification

• Review of the design plans and related documents for a new

vessel
• Attendance at the construction of the vessel
• Attendance at the relevant production facilities that provide
key components
• Attendance at the sea trials & other trials (gas trial if any)

Introduction of BKI
• Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) was established on
July 1, 1964 and remained the only national classification
bureau appointed by the government of the Republic of
Indonesia to give class of Indonesian-flagged vessels.
• This task was then legalized in the Decree of Minister
of Sea Transportation No. Th. 1/17/2, dated September 26,
1964, relating Manual of for Indonesian flagged vessel to
have a classification certificate from BKI.
• Vessel classification is an activity to give class of vessel
based on hull construction, machinery, and electricity, with
the goal to asses weather a vessel is merit to sail.
