ISO 9606-1 :2012

Qualification testing of
welders- fusion welding-
 Why?

◦ The ability of welder to follow verbal or

written instructions and verification of his
welding skills are important factors in
ensuring the quality of the welded product

principle of the standard
 a qualification test qualifies the welder not
only for the conditions used in the test ,
but also for all joints which are considered
easier to weld
 on the presumption that the welder has
received a specific training and / or has
industrial practice within the range of
qualification
Test Procedure & Test coupons
11. Designation

The designation of a welder qualification shall comprise the

following items in the order given

1. The number of this standard.

2. The essential variables
3. Welding process , (ref 4.2,5.2 and EN ISO 4063
4. Product type: plate(P) pipe(T) refer to 4.3.1 and 5.3
5. Type of weld: butt weld ( BW), fillet weld(FW) refer to 5.4
6. Material group: refer to 5.5
7. Filler materials : refer to 5.5
8. Dimensions of test piece: material thickness t and outside
pipe diameter D , ref to 5.7
9. Welding positions: refer to 5.8 and EN ISO 6947
10. Weld details; ref to 5.9

Type of shielding and backing gas shall not be incorporated in the designation
but shall be included in the welders’ qualification test certificate
