Cell Analogy

Adrienne Nardone
 For baseball and softball players, one of the best
and most popular brands of bats on the market is
DeMarini Sports, Inc. They are headquartered in
Hillsboro, Oregon. Ray DeMarini, the CEO of the
company, is in charge of all the workers and
products. Security guards are constantly guarding
Analogy: this big and expensive company, protecting the
DeMarini Bats people and objects inside. All of the workers and
the CEO are normally in the shop making the
equipment. There is also the assistant to the CEO,
who hires new people when needed in the shop.
When it comes to making the bats themselves, the
first step is to get the aluminum. Then, the metal is
heated, shaped, and painted.
 The bright colors DeMarini chooses for their bats
are one reason why hitters love them so much!
Finally, the bat handle is wrapped with athletic
tape. Any defects or mistakes made on a bat while
being made is destroyed in a scraps bin. The
energy to power the machines in the shop is heat
that comes from furnaces. The smoke is released
Analogy: through towers that come out of the furnaces so it
DeMarini Bats does not harm the workers inside. The company
has grown so rapidly that they expanded the
factory itself. Pillars were placed inside the
building so that the structure would not collapse.
After the bats are painted and the handles are
taped, they are moved to storage rooms, where
workers add finishing touches and make sure the
bats dry completely.
 Once the bats are dry, movers come and
transport the finished products to the
packaging room. In this area, workers
double-check the bats for mistakes or
defects one last time. A plastic wrap is

Finally, the bats are transported to the
postal office to go to their final destination.
Young girl’s and boy’s faces light up when
they receive their new bats every day!
 Cell Membrane-provides protection and controls what enters and
exits the cell
Cell  Security guards protect the factory at all times, and controls what
Membrane enters and exits the factory.
 Nucleus- the control center of the cell. Contains the cell’s DNA
and coded instructions for making proteins and other molecules.
Nucleus  Ray DeMarini controls the entire factory and has the instructions
for making bats and other sports equipment.
Rough  Rough ER- a system of folded membranes that has ribosomes and
packages proteins to send to the Golgi Apparatus.
Endoplasmic  The packaging room has workers that send the finished bats to
Reticulum the postal office.
 Smooth ER- a system of folded membranes that makes lipids,
Smooth breaks down toxic materials, contains enzymes, and has no
ribosomes.
Endoplasmic  The towers dispose of the toxic materials outside of the factory so
Reticulum that it does not harm the people on the inside. No workers are
needed to power the towers.
 Golgi Apparatus- a system of folded membranes. Proteins
produced in the Rough ER are moved to the Golgi Apparatus.
Golgi Lipids and proteins are modified, sorted, packaged, and sent to
their final destination.
Apparatus  Postal office receives bats from the packaging room in the factory
to sort, modify, and send to their final destination.
 Vesicle- store and move materials between cell organelles, as well
as to and from the cell surface. Has a smaller membrane, and is an
Vesicle enclosed structure.
 Movers kept track of and moved the cells from place to place.
 Mitochondria- breaks down sugar into energy and has two
membranes. Energy released is stored up ATP and uses ATP to
Mitochondria work.
 Furnaces broke down energy to power different machines and
equipment inside the factory.
 Lysosome- digests food particles, wastes, cell parts, and foreign
invaders. Carry digestive enzymes to vesicles or engulfs particles.
Lysosome Means “to break down”.
 Scraps bin destroyed bats that were broken or damaged.
 Vacuole- large, sac-like, membrane-enclosed structures. Store
materials like water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Vacuole  Storage room stored finished bats and other sports equipment
until it was needed or bought.
 Ribosomes- is not a membrane-bound organelle. Proteins
assemble on them, and they sometimes float freely around the
Ribosomes cell or are attached to the Rough ER.
 Workers assembled the bats or other equipment and transported
them where they needed to go.
 Cytoplasm- jelly-like open space inside of a cell.
Cytoplasm  Shop contained all of the machines, products, and workers with
some free space around them.
 Cytoskeleton- web of proteins in the cytoplasm, keeps the cell
membrane from collapsing. Acts as both a muscle and a skeleton.
Cytoskeleton Made of protein fibers.
 Pillars protect the factory and help keep the structure intact so it
does not collapse.
 Nucleolus- region in the middle of the nucleus and makes
Nucleolus ribosomes
 Assistant hires new workers to work in the factory when needed.
 Protein- instructions to make are located in the nucleus. Assemble
and transport on ribosomes and other organelles.
Protein  The instructions to make the bats are with Ray DeMarini, and are
transported to different destinations by workers.
