Introduction
 Electrical Contracting Works:
 An engineering project in which electrical installation works include
may be residential, public, buildings; entertainment complexes;
industries, etc. commercial
 In such projects, generally the following sub-works are
involved:
i. Architectural work
ii. Structural and building works
iii. Sanitation work
iv. Electrical installation work
v. Data, telephone, access control system, fire alarm & security
system,
vi. Lift/escalator systems
vii. MATV [Master Antenna Television System] and PAS [ Public
announcer system ] system
viii. .HVAC system
ix. Building Management Systems (BMS)

Contracting parties
 In an engineering project of the above type at least
three main parties are involved, viz.,
 The client
 The consultant, and
 The contractor

2/3/2019 3
The client

The client is generally the owner of a project for

which much the above sub works may be involved.

The client may be an individual, a business

firm/company, an NGO or a public/ govt entity

2/3/2019 4
The consultant
 various professionals (architects, civil, electrical,
computer etc engineers)
 The team may be under one license or a consortium
of licensed professionals
 The consultant’s main functions are:
 To design one or more of the above sub works for the
client
 to supervise & inspect the correct implementation of the
design on behalf of the client until commissioned.
 Serves as the coordinator of the whole or sub-work
 Since it is usually difficult to hire and maintain
professionals of all spectrum, the consultant may
out source some of the works to sub contractor/s
2/3/2019 5
The contractor
 The contractor is a firm that may be owned by a lay or
professional business man/woman but consisting of :
 sufficient number of qualified, skilled engineers and technicians
 sufficient construction facilities and equipment
 sufficient financial capital
 The main function of the contractor is to implement each of
the above construction/installation designs in the project
according to the design & supervision provided by the
consultant
 For the service it rendered, the contractor is paid by the
client.
 The contractor, like the consultant, may out source some of
its duties to sub contractor/s.
 Should the main contractor employ the services of another firm, this
firm is called the subcontractor and is responsible to the main
contractor.

Electrical Costing And Estimation

 Estimating is an art by which we can get an approximation

of the material, investment involved, and the time to be
taken for the completion of Electrification project we are
planning to do.

 By estimating the material cost and the time required for

completion of the project we can set help in making right
and firm decision while making a contract with any firm.

Essential Elements of Estimating And
Costing.
 The estimator should also know the following aspects, which are
essential elements of estimating: -

 Specification of material

 Latest market cost of material

 Price list and net prices

 Calculation of material and labour cost

 Knowledge of purchase system

 Labour cost.

2/3/2019 27
Cont.
 Specifications
 The specification indicates the quantity and types of sockets, lighting
points and other fixed accessories required for each room, and
sometimes the preferred manufacturer. It may also indicate the type and
size of cable to be used (see sample specification). Double, pole, iron
clad, main switch, 30A rating, 250v grading

 The specification and cost of all necessary material should be known at

the time of preparing a report on estimating and pricing of the project. It
will be very difficult to purchase the material from market without
knowledge of specifications.

 For example, It will be very difficult to choose a specific holder out of

different holders to be installed in an electrical installation, because there
are many holders, batten holders or screw type holders, pendant holders
available in market.

 In the absence of detailed specifications, the shopkeeper feels difficulty

in providing the correct material.

2/3/2019 28
Cont.

 The architect’s drawings normally show elevations and

plan views, with details of recommended positions for
all accessories.
 It is from these two sources of information, specification
and drawing, that a design for the electrical installation
can be prepared and a competitive tender submitted.

Cont.
 Market Survey: - The market cost of material is that cost of the material
at which it can be purchased or brought to the store at any time. The
mistakes or carelessness show purchasing the material with out any
market survey will add the cost of electrical installation along with addition
of time in completion of the project. Market survey is an art in which only
experienced persons succeed.

 Price List: - By market surrey, the estimator gets the price list of the
material from shopkeepers in which the shop keepers give the retail and
wholesale prices according to local market rates. This list is updated
according market rate from time to time.
 Hence, at the time of estimating and costing, the price list available at
that time of the market should be taken in to consideration.

Cont.
 Net Price: - is that price, in which all the imposed taxes such as sale tax,
Central sales tax, excise duty and other local taxes are included.
 Electrical Schedule: - is that list or plan of the building by which we come to
know the number of points provided in each room of the building under
estimation. We need to know the ceiling outlet, different switches, wall plugs
and any other special plus etc. in any room of a building under estimation.
 Determination Of Labor Cost: The total cost involved on the project is
completed in two steps: -
1. Quantity of material and cost determination
2. Determining of labor charges
 To arrive at a final conclusion for determination of labor charges for wiring a
particular building is very difficult. It is because of the effect that labor charges
are different at different places It is therefore necessary to arrive at a
common conclusion on the aspects of labor charges. The labor charges can
be as under:
 As per duration and work amount
 As per unit work basis
 As per percentage of material cost
2/3/2019 36
Bills of quantities

 Usually prepared by a quantity surveyor, bills of quantities

indicate, for each trade concerned with the work, the
quantity and sometimes cost of the materials to be used.
