business units with OE Expectations, guidance,
and tools to improve Contractor Safety

CSM S&R Owner Starter Kit
Purpose:
This Starter Kit was designed to provide you with the
guidance needed to start your Contractor Safety
Management Program. It provides you with a straw-
model process to follow, a checklist of
implementation elements, supporting materials, and
resources.

Assessment Tool or OE Assessment
•Engage Leaders -- Leadership sessions, Leaders Questioning Tools,

•Build fluency with the new OE Expectations and the CSM Guidance
Document
•Establish Accountability -- Assign roles and responsibilities
•Establish Metrics and Targets
•Communicate to both employees and contractors

CSM Guidance Document

The CSM Guidance Document was developed to help

assist operating companies and business units in
their efforts toward completing the cultural shift
toward world class and improving contractor safety
performance in ChevronTexaco.

• First, the Guidance Document provides Guiding

Principles that will lead the cultural shift needed to
achieve world-class contractor safety performance
• Second, it outlines the Corporation’s Operational
Excellence Expectations specifically designed with
contractor safety in mind
• Third, it provides guidance in meeting those
expectations and supplies OPCOs and BUs with
suggested practices, tools, and resources that may
help in the development of organizational-specific
Contractor Safety Management Programs
The Guidance Document is electronically formatted

and structured to be easy to use and navigate. For
example, you will be able to “click” your way
through the document, taking you from the highest
level (OE Expectations) to the most granular level
(the resources and tools) and back again.

Purpose:
This presentation was developed to help position
Contractor Safety Management as an important, culture-
changing program with your OPCO/BU.
How to use:
Pick and choose the slides that are pertinent for your
audience to build a customized presentation.

CSM Coffee Pot Speech
Purpose:
Use this tool to inform your supervisors, managers, and
executives on the general plans and purpose of your
Contractor Safety Management Program.
How to use:
This is a one-page document that offers talking points to
help you communicate your Contractor Safety
Management efforts.

• Your participation in the Network is very
important. The Network provides a means to
communicate with other members and subject
matter experts on contractor safety
management issues
