The Farakka Barrage Project has three main objectives: to divert water from the Ganga River into the Bhagirathi-Hooghly river system through a 38.38 km long feeder canal to maintain the Kolkata Port; to reduce salinity and ensure fresh water supply to areas including Kolkata by increasing upland supply from the Ganga to the Bhagirathi; and to provide direct road and rail communication between Northeastern States and the rest of the country via the rail-cum-road bridge built over the Ganga at Farakka.
