WHAT IS ASTRONOMY?

• Astronomy is a science that studies events

that occur outside the Earth's atmosphere
and the structure of celestial bodies (such as
planets, comets and galaxies), in general, is
what studies the space in its totality.
• The word “Astronomy” comes from the Greek
“Astron”, which means “star”.
THE IMPACT OF ASTRONOMY IS SOCIETY IN TERMS:
• Industry:
The iPhone camera has a charge-coupled device, an
instrument that converts the movement of electric charge in a digital value,
currently this disposition is used in most cameras, webcams and mobile phones.

• Aerospace Technology:
Space telescopes have advanced defense satellites that require identical hardware and
technology.

• Energy:
Space telescopes are built in an extremely clean environment to prevent dust particles
obscures the mirrors or instruments.
• Medicine:
Methods and similar instruments are now used in hospitals and
pharmaceutical laboratories.

• International Collaboration:
Today, astronomers are traveling around the world to attend conferences, learn from
each other, and using telescopes of other countries or collaboration of countries.
THE IMPACT OF ASTRONOMY IN SOCIETIES AND
CIVILIZATIONS
• The Astronomy had and has a lot of impact in our
society. We learned how to navigate on the seas, how
to use the sky as a map or like a watch. The ancient
societies predicted periods of rain and drought,
through Astronomy, to distinguish times of planting
and harvesting.
• Some civilizations created gods, like the Greeks,
the Maya and more.
• Whole cities built "guided" by the sun for many
reasons, to get more direct sunlight, raise animals, to
farming, etc...
• Current societies also have many influences from
astronomy, we create science, math, physics and
more through astronomy, we also studied the planet
earth and other planets knowing more about our
universe.
ASTRONOMERS AND PHILOSOPHERS IN THE HISTORY OF
ASTRONOMY AND THEIR IDEAS
• Thales of Miletus: considered that • Aristarchus: proposed that the Earth
the Earth was flat; was the center of the Solar System;

• Galileo Galilei: perfected the telescope,

• Pythagoras: said that the earth was
and used it to observe the craters of the

Moon and the phases of Venus;

• Aristotle: explained that the • Nicolaus Copernicus: stated that the
