Introduction
Power Factor(PF) is an electrical quantity
which is often related to power quantity and
energy efficiency analyses.
Power Factor is defined as the ratio between
the active power (P) and the apparent
power(S).
Alternatively, it can be expressed as the cosine
of the angle between the power phasors, only
for pure sinusoidal voltage and current
components.
There are two different types of power are
associated with electric power system.
Active power consumed by load while
reactive power energizes capacitive as well as
magnetic circuits.
In many industries, for example, loads with a
quick dynamic operation consume high levels
of reactive power (e.g.,induction
motors,welding machines etc.,).
Therefore, there is a significant PF reduction
that should be fixed, usually through capacitor
bank switching.
