Calorific Value
It is defined as the heat liberated in kJ by complete combustion of I kg of fuel
solid or liquid. For gaseous fuel ,the normal practice is to express calorific
value in kJ /m3 of gas at S.T.P
1. H.C.V:- It is the total heat liberated in kJ/kg or m3. All fuels
containing hydrogen when combines with oxygen will form steam
during the process of combustion. If product of combustion are
cooled at initial temperature,the steam formed as a result of
combustion will condense.Thus maximum heat is abstracted. This is
called HCV
2. L.C.V:- It is difference between the H.C.V and heat absorbed by
water due to combustion and surface moisture.Unit is kj/kg

3. Where x is fraction of water vapor present in product of combustion


due to combustion of 1 kg of fuel

The choice of fuel for any industries or organization for industrial process is
depended upon a number of factors. The most important are being availability,
suitability, safety and price.
Looking to the availability , coal is more suitable for power plant . But when we
use coal as fuel , there are two type of problems .
1. Before combustion problems &
2. After combustion problems.
1. In before combustion problem :
(a) Storage problem(Required more space, more land (room)
(b) Unloading problem (When over size coal, big size stone pieces,lumpy coal and
sticky coal from O.C.Mine is coming that times these over size materials not pass
through the tippler grill & they required break & it takes more times.
(c) Pollution problem : (During the unloading of coal wagons & during high speed
wind , the fine coal particles & dust flying in the atmosphere&mixed with
air.When we inhaled this polluted air, respiratory problem will occur.
(2) After combustion problems :
When coal burnt in boiler S.P.M. , SO2 ,NOX mix with air and air becomes
polluted

 TAKE CLEARANCE FROM BOILER
MAINTENANCE SECTION.
 CHECK MILL PERMISSIVE.
 OPEN ALL COAL LINE V/V’S AND COLD AIR
SHUT OFF GATES
 ENSURE PULV. READY.
 ENSURE AVAILABILITY OF IGNITION ENERGY.
 START THE MILL.
 OPEN HOT AIR GATE.
 INCREASE MILL OUT LET TEMP. TO 65 DEGC
TO 75 DEG C.
 START FEEDER.
RAW COAL FEEDER
 RAW COAL FEEDER IS UTILISED TO FEED
COAL OR OTHER MATERIALS TO THE
PULVERISES AT A UNIFORM CONTROLLED
RATE.
 POSITIVE INFINITE VARIABLE (PIV) SPEED
DRIVE IS USED FOR DRIVING THE FEEDER.
