VOLCANO

What is Pacific Ring

of Fire?
• This is an area around the
edges of the Pacific
Ocean where intense
volcanic and seismic
activities (earthquake)
occur.

The mechanism for the
breakup of Pangaea is
now explained in terms
of PLATE TECTONICS
rather than Wegener’s
concept of CONTINETAL
DRIFT.
Why is it called Pacific
Ring of Fire?
• Its edges mark a circle of
high volcanic and seismic
activity (earthquakes). Most
of the active volcanoes on
Earth are located on this
circumference.
What are the countries
that belong to the
Pacific ring of fire?
USA, Mexico, Russia,
Japan, Philippines
According to the Philippine
Institute of volcanology and
Seismology (PHIVOLCS) our
country is ideal site for any
volcanic activity. It is therefore,
important for us to know how
this natural phenomenon
happens to reduce the risks
and effects it may cause
Learning Competencies/Objectives
In this module, the Learner should be able
to:
1. differentiate active and inactive
volcanoes;
2. describe the different types of volcanoes;
3. explain what happens when volcanoes
erupt; and
4. illustrate how energy from volcanoes may
be tapped for human use.

Definition of Terms
Active Volcanoes are those that have a record of
eruption within the last 600 years or those that
erupted 10, 000 years ago based on analyses of their
material
Inactive Volcanoes are those that have not erupted
for the last 10, 1000 years and their physical form is
being changed by agents of weathering & erosion
through formation of deep gullies
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and
Seismology) – it is the government agency taskes to
inform and warn the public about the disasters that
may arise from volcanic eruptions, earthquakes,
tsunamis and other related geotectonic phenomena.

rest are inactive.
• Volcanic eruption is often
associated with negative effects.
As usually seen on televisions, what
happens to the people living near a
volcano when it erupts?
• What if you live near one of the
active volcanoes in the Philippines,
for example in Albay where Mt.
Mayon is situated?
• What if that volcano near you
erupts? How can you help the
people who are affected by the
eruption, say for example the
